Anyone own a Colchester triumph 2000?

i dont know, i have a 11" harrison here but i think if i was going for a bigger lathe it will be a colchester, i think they are a better machine than the harrison personally, ive used both in the past and to me the colchester is a sweeter machine.
its hard to get a harrison with a decent spindle bore too.

The harrisons are better made though. I don't know if its allowed to mention other forums, but head over to the practical machinist forum and mention colchester lathes, you will be shocked at the response you'll get. Colchesters are genuinely nice lathes to use but they are soft, the headstocks get very noisey if they do any serious work, and the bed, while having an "induction hardened" sticker on them, are soft and also wear. I have a colchester, i like it, but i got it for nothing, and i would not put serious money down for one. TOS are another brand i'd look at, i've used a brand new one and it was a nice machine.

Totally agree, It's more than I thought it would go for as the last two lathes I've kept an eye on went for a few hundred each..

im not 100% sold on a colchester so dont get me wrong.

i was looking at the harrisons before and i came to the conclusion that the M400 would be about the size im after. maybe a 350 possibly but id like a long bed one whatever it is as i want to be able to work longer stuff like hydraulic cylinders and shafts, its not something id need all the time but id rather be looking at it than for it iykwim.
the other thing too is i want a lathe with as much tooling as possible with it as im sure you know yourself when you start buying 4 jaws and steadys they arent going to be cheap so the more id come with a purchase the better it id be.

as of right now im building a tool room for myself but its a work in progress for now and it probably wont be finished til the end of the year as i have paying work i need to keep doing to fund it so to speak as its going to cost a few quid when its all said and done.
and the biggest end of the money i have for a lathe is tied up in a 55T ironworker i have here and i dont want to sell that until i have a workshop press built to bend work as i currently use that ironworker for bending stuff as it has that attachment on it so its a case of doing a job to get another job done, which seems to be the norm about here with me.

would i be right in saying geting a harrison with a big bore would be tricky, the last M300 long bed i worked on had a small enough bore in it, iirc it was something like 55 or 60mm i think, altho she would of been bought like that but i havnt studied them too deep to see if bigger bores are common or not.
the other thing that was kind of putting me off was the threading end of things, the harrison would need gear changes would it not, where as the colchester can do imp and metric off the bat practically?.

There was a harrison long bed in my last job Tinman, i liked it as a machine, it had a pretty large spindle bore as i recall, never remember being stuck to do a job over the spindle bore. I do agree with you as regards steadys etc, i have being looking online for a fixed steady for the colchester i have, they go for silly money. Any good machine tool dealers up north ? The only one i know is a chap called Damien who goes to autojumbles etc, but he tells me he deals in larger gear than he brings to the shows.

I assume this is an Ulster only colloquialism?

Kenequip are useless, but i find most machinery suppliers here are useless. They don't really want to know you unless you are dropping major money on a cnc machining centre.

the first one is cheap but its tired too, and that gap piece could be very tricky to find, i know of a harrison M400 with the gap piece missing and for a right while i looked to see if i could find one but with no luck what so ever but in saying that the colchester there is worth it in parts alone as long as they havnt scuppered the box on her, the bit about it not going into reverse could leave her dear, id say if it was a simple problem they would of fixed it.

the second on i think is reid machinery but i could be wrong, id say its a good few quid.
