Anyone Know about Renaults ?

Hi

Am having a right nightmare with my 06 2.5 Trafic.

About two weeks ago it cut out at 70 with a clunk.

Thought it would be the cambelt gone but on inspection the belt is intact
with no missing teeth.

I have stripped out the cambelt side gearing but cannot find anything broken or snapped etc.
One thing I did find when I removed the housing that covers the intermediate
gears,water pump and high pressure gear,was a large circlip 2.5" diameter which
dropped out when I took the cover off.

I cannot find where the damn thing has come from ?
Anyone got any ideas as the Renault manual I have is less than useful and Haynes dont do one for the 2.5 .

Any help greatly appreciated as I got no hair left to pull out

If I remember correctly the cam belt is not driven by the crank it is higher up ?you may still find you have lost the timing though and bent valves if for some reason the intermediate gear has moved, the circlip may hold its thrust brg in the correct position. have you checked the DFC's if it mentions cam or crank position that is probably what caused it

Can the crankshaft be turned by hand a full turn?
If the timing belt gear has timing marks just set it right on and U will know straight away did she lost timing and the valves meet the pistons.

A couple days ago ive seen engine that jammed and the man was complying that it jump the timing on a new belt that ive fit. We removed the spark plugs (still was very hard to move) turned the crank by some custom made tool and all marks aligned!!!
So we took the belt of and found the bottom end seized due to large dint in the sump pan that blocked the oil pick up!

I donk know much about Renaults but just the basic from Jap cars

yes thats right.
Problem is I cannot see any recess that this circlip would sit in on the block or on any of the gear assembly's.
Do you think I should take the top end off ?
I have turned the motor over at the crank by hand and cant here anything.
Would I be able to tell if the valves are bent ?

I do know my 61plate Renault traffic clutch pedal went to the floor last thursday and had to get recovered to Renault,
this is the third van in our company thats had clutch problems,
the other two went within a few months of being new,

apparently common and not a simple fix as its often the internal slave cylinder which means gearbox out.

if you can turn it over on the starter and it just spins with no obvious compression then it is very likely that the valves are bent, After all it was going 70mph in gear when it stopped so if it is ucked it will have already done the damage, also no doubt you tried to restart it at the road side by spinning it over and over.
If you take off the inlet pipe and put your hand over blocking it, it should try to pull your hand in strongly.
If the thrust has allowed the gear to move it may have put the timing out enough to have clipped all the valves I would think the brg has moved out covering the circlip groove and needs pushing (read) tapping back in. BUT IF IT HAS COME OUT IT WILL DO IT AGAIN do not rely on that clip and groove it may look ok but they both wear tapered I have 'repaired some gear box ones by tacking a little bar across the open end of the clip it works but that is not a proper 100%repair , can you not get the DTC's ie codes out of it that will probably tell you what has happened with no work involved

Yep they are crap boxes my mate agearbox spec does loads of em diffs go as well

Do you need a diagnostic tool to get the codes ?

I cant do that as I got the cam locking tool on em at the moment and dont wanna move owt while the gears are all off it.

Get the rocker cover off. If all the valves appear to be open, then its a safe bet they are bent.

Gonna get the cover off tomorrow and have a look.

To get the rocker cover off you need to take the injectors out. Sometimes they seize in and can be a pain also they are coded so label them before taking out so they go back were they came from.

Yep thats the pain better to get the codes
PS if it has gone out of time they dont allways damage/ bend the valves the rocker shafts pull/ break the 6mm bolts out of the head and tear the threads and will need helicoiling but at least you wont have to take the head off
