Anyone for hire?

I am looking to employ the services of anyone who fancies a little challenge, i am repairing a digger at the moment and have made a few new bits, but one part that is annoying me is a pin in the control linkage that i currently cant make. Realy needs the use of a milling machine. Not sure if this is the right part of the forum or it should be in the wanted section?

The head bit seems to have been milled down from round bar turned to those dimensions, but my CADfu is not up to recreating such things. the only important dimensions are the slot, the 8mm shaft and the thickness of the slotted bit. some artistic license can probably be used to make the job easier if needed so long as it doesn't drastically alter the dimensions. Such as the chamfered edge of the slotted section can just be rounded off on a belt grinder or the like

Also just realised I never put the dimension of where the slot is in relation to anything. From top to first center is 6mm, if anyone comes forward as interested I'll supply an amended drawing

A mill is not necessary to make that part. You do not even need a vertical slide for your lathe. Make the 8mm dia. stem overlong and hold it sideways in the lathe toolpost, with the milling cutter in the lathe chuck. You might have to wind the toolholder up and down a bit to get the flat surface, but the amount is not critical so does not need precision control in that axis. Once the first flat is created, rotate 180 degrees and use a parallel off the face of the chuck to align it (see DoubleBoost's technique with parting tools and screwcutting tools). Make a dummy piece of 8mm dia. with a point on it. Put that in the toolholder and line up its point with a lathe centre. Drill the first hole of the slot with an endmill. Use the cross-slide to move over teh slot width and drill the other half of the slot.

Good point about not needing a vertical slide. If I don't get any takers it's an option

Had a rake through my random tooling and found a couple of 2 flute end mills, found some 12mm black bar and had an experiment, went pretty well! So much so I have ordered 6mm end mills and kept the bar in the tool post to keep alignment. Will try again tomorrow, slot is currently 5mm

Joking aside, does nobody use hand tools anymore?

Start with a piece of 12mm round bar, turn down the 10mm and 8mm bits then a 6mm drill and a couple of files. Take about an hour.

If you want to see what can be done with basic hand tools, look no further than Allen Millyard. Much of his engineering work is done with a saw and a file! What a fantastic engineer.

Issue with using hand tools is tolerances, the slot is worn less than a mm, but that amplifies to several cm of movement in the levers once assembled.
I'm sure if you have the focus and time to hand file and cut it could be done, don't imagine it would be easy filing a perfect 6mm slot though
