Anyone been excused from jury duty

Been summoned twice. First time was when I was living in Kent, explained on phone that I was self employed and the chap on the other end was very helpful and put me down for a lifetime exemption. He was very understanding of the financial implications for the self employed.
Second time was when I had relocated to Norfolk and my previous exemption had not travelled with me. Once again a quick phone call to say I had a hospital visits and operation coming up. Genuine I hasten add, but no questions asked or proof required to excuse me.
Think a lot depends on who you are dealing with at the jury summons department.

I was excused on the grounds that I'm self employed and had contracts to fulfill, it was the Bunsfield oil explosion , over 10 years ago , went on for weeks !

Yep, been excused 3 times now. Once because I was going to be on holiday, the second was due to me dealing with my Father's funeral, and now (because I work for a Forensic Science company) I am permanently excused.

I do hope you can get excused. I'm 56 and not been called. I am now in a position where I would like to do my duty but I expect that precludes me from selection

I know someone who got called and turned up the first morning straight from the farm, wellies covered in slurry and got excused sent straight home

An exs daughter turned 18 and was called upon within weeks of her birthday

I did serve on a jury once, at the Old Bailey no less. It was a boring case about some Chinese/Singaporean business shenanegans where one side accused the other of kidnap (they were keeping some chap in a hotel against his will).

For some unfathomable reason, I was made foreman, The weird thing was (and it still bothers me tbh) the judge told me " I am instructing you to deliver a guilty verdict".

I didn't think that was how it worked but I went along with it anyway....

Iam 57 and never been called. I hope to go sometime. I already have the verdict. GUILTY

i did it once for a week volunteered for another it was so good . they pay your expenses and loss of earnings as well

Twice. As a part time stay at home dad I was excused due to childcare issues. When I first contacted them I was told that 22 people had been contacted, they needed 18 to be available and then picked 12 on the day(I think), if I wrote to let them know why I couldn't do it as long as they had the 18 it wouldn't be a problem. First case would have been at coroners court.

a judge can instruct a not guilty verdict under certain circumstances only. they cannot instruct a guilty verdict.

Wifey had done it once (jury duty) - went on for weeks.

Sadly I have to report - my criminal record is not good enough for me to be called for "jury service".

Nothing in the last 30years - but some very serious things in my early years.

So I declare myself a "reformed character"....

Don't take the "p#ss here" - I think three decades without getting into any/serious trouble is a result!

I am quite proud of it - being a good boy...

Exemptions from jury service

If you're over 18 years old, you can be called for jury service. Some people aren't eligible for jury service or can get excused because of their job. There's no automatic exemption from jury service due to your age. You can ask to be excluded when you're over 70.

The only case I was actually called in for was a flasher

Trying desperately not to wet myself, all I could envisage was us sat around looking at pictures of knobs, comparing them to the defendant

I bet they'd have a lot more people to choose from if they matched your hourly rate/day rate rather than some meager amount that barely equates to minimum wage.

That's what I was saying to the wife

What they offer barely covers my daily running costs which I still pay regardless of working.
