It's perpetual movement which is correct, it is automatic which is also correct, one of the tests for Rolex that has not been used is four clockwise swings and it should start up, this one does exactly that, also there should be virtually no audible ticking and can't hear anything at all,.... so far so good

Rolex only started laser etching the glass 20 odd years ago if I remember correctly.
Once an expert whips the case off they can usually tell straight away from the quality of the movement and the jewel bearings.
Nice watch that is even if fake. Let us know what they value it at

They phoned me again yesterday asking when I was fetching it in because apparently they have a customer for that exact model.

We are having a day in Carlisle next Thursday so will go and be told why it needs servicing, why it requires cleaning, why they can't offer xyz because of brexit/the weather/wrong time of year and why it would have been easier to sell if it had flashing lights and a pink wrist strap etc etc but as a favour because I have travelled miles they can offer xxx

At the moment I am playing their game but there is no way I would what take they offer without more research, the visit is to mainly verify it's genuine, it may just be one of the best fakes I have seen, certainly not like the Benidorm 5 euro marvels

It's the ones that can be bought in the Far East that cost upwards of £100 that are the best replicas. A friend paid £140 for a replica AP. Even has the glass back, automatic movement. Insane watch and would cost 100x that if genuine.

If it is fake I will tell er indoors it's real and she can have it, keep me out of the bad books for a while at least.

i would sojest in trying remember where it come from if off a cheap house prob not real but if from expensive house more possable but that also means they prob went on holiday where you pickup the fakes from

and if they got a customer for it they can pay more as they have got a quick sale

i would say the fakes 15 years ago where not that great so if 15 years ago that would add to the idea of it being genuine

The problem is I used to buy all sorts, house and shop clearances, bankrupt stock, the list is endless and 90% of it was not documented and what receipts there was has long gone.

Our local auction house back in the early 70's to mid 80's used to sell boxes of mixed goods and I bought them, often for £1 a box or even less, probably over the years I must have bought hundreds of boxes so you see what I mean about being difficult to track the items I still have.

I believe that nearly all wind up watches tick at a certain rate, producing the jerky movement of the second hand, Rolex are probably one of the high quality movement that tick at double rate to give greater accuracy and a more fluid smooth second hand, I know that some of the expensive range of Seiko watches ( £3 or 4 thousand quid) have the double rate movement,
Just done a google, High end quality fast watch movements beat at 28,800 per hour.

Just had our resident Rolex expert have a look at the photo
The Bezel looks wrong.
But ideally could do with better photos.
Fakes for £10-20 are easy to spot but the Turkish £100+ ones are very good.
Lenard Dews in Blackpool are very good and used to be a Rolex agent so will know for certain.
I have seen some excellent fakes but once opened up it was an ETC movement which is very good quality but now even ETC movements are being faked.
I know two places local to me who ate very experience and would possibly just look for free as to be honest this is the only way to be certain.

Hi my dad collects alsorts of watches including rolex so I have seen many real rolex watches what you find with fakes is the magnifying glass does not actually magnify anything and the crown doesn't adjust the time smoothly also bezel doesn't spin freely or very hard the move. Remember these are engineered to the best quality and look quality

Also forgot to say if the magnifying glass is raised above for example stuck on it is definitely a fake genuine rolex are built within the glass

The magnifying portion was proud on the bezel of mine when I bought it new in 1980 and has been replaced with similar a couple times by Rolex service centres.

This one magnify's a lot, it stands proud and appears to be a part of the glass not stuck on, is the bezel supposed to rotate, I can see no reason why it should?

Rolexes, like all automatic watches, do tick (they have to, otherwise it's an electric motor ) but they will tend to be between 5 and 10 oscillations a second and it's very faint.

A couple of things to look for are as described around the glass and whether there is a serial number on the shoulders. The glass should be sapphire crystal so you should not be able to scratch it with anything metal. Given that you're taking it to a dealer anyway, I wouldn't bother trying to get the strap off to check the shoulders - some of them can be very fiddly and the last thing you want to do is damage them.

I think that as long as you take it to an official Rolex dealer then your chances of getting ripped off are close to zero. No dealer is going to risk their reputation and dealership for the sake of a single watch.
A dealer will be very happy to verify authenticity and give you a date (which gets you the value), even if you're not looking to sell it through them. So I'd stop worrying about all the "look for this / watch out for that" and just go see the dealer.
