If the fault was just caused by a wheel being rotated during the test the light would have reset after a short drive, all vag cars abs will reset once it see's good signals again. Diagnostic check will be needed to know any more.

ABS systems do a self test at a certain speed. For example a man fiesta tests at precisely 14mph on a gentle pull away. If your light hasn't gone out there is a problem somewherr

That's just about top speed on my fiesta! I must have got lucky.

Well I cant see the mot guy causing your problem Unless the wheel sensor wire was caught somewhere and then again that is not his fault.

managed to get a cable and copy of VCDS. turned out to be a steering angle sensor fault. Looks like the engine was running during the wheel bearing suspension inspection??? Soon as the wheels are turned independently this sets it off !!!
Bit of jiggery pokery with the laptop and all is well.............

When testing vehicles that have ABS fitted the road wheels should not be allowed to rotate clear of the standing surface with the ignition on as this can cause the ABS system to indicate a fault which may require specialist equipment to rectify.


Modern cars eh??? What happened to just changing the condenser and dizzy cap like the old days !!!

go back to MOT place and complain tell them they caused the fault and should know better as it states in the testers manual

Sorry if I have qiven you some bad advice I have done many thousands of tests and never once had an abs light come on during the test that wasnt cable relate. when checking the wires etc they have fell apart at the joint and that was only once!
But I have just checked with two other garages and one mate has had this scenario, once, this was also the case with an audi, if the engine is off but ign is on, and the wheel spun it has shown up as this fault. This also had to be reset with diagnostic gear.
So it does look like it was the mot station.

borrowed the gear to sort it, so no costs, just a bit of inconvenience. good learning curve for me, as I re-calibrated it myself.

just took it back a few hours ago, they must have caught me in a good mood (rare !!!). the tester looked a bit sheepish and didn't come out but handed the MOT over to the admin to give to me. pointless ripping into them............i'll be going elsewhere in future.

note to self...........tell MOT guy next year not to rotate them bloody wheels with the ign on !!!

Then you get the opposite end of the scale... I bought a Mk3 Granada as a donor car. It was at a scrapyard, the boss of which told me that it was in such good condition, they couldn't bear to scrap it and it went through the MOT without issue. I went to the other side of the country by train to pick it up.

Well, how it got a ticket is beyond me. The first giveaway I suppose was no advisories on a 1990 vehicle. Inspection showed front brake pads and discs well past the wear limits, exhaust middle box blowing, exhaust joint blowing, broken indicator glass, impact damage to windscreen in line of sight, ABS warning flashing, stalling and general misbehaviour, speedo intermittent, rusty engine bay and other gems. Not too much of an issue to me, but to someone who wanted to use it, it could have been more serious.

As the test was more than a month before I collected it, there was no point making any complaint of course.

How do you mean when you refer to 'turning the wheels independantly'
Independant of what and do we mean rotating or swiveling.

The simple fact is, do the test without the ignition on. Its a quick recipe for a flat battery and wheel speed related faults.

One place I went to left the engine running for the entire test.

Seen the same done during tracking. So pointless and more likely to burn oneself while doing the job.
