White vinegar is the ticket for neutralising and cleaning leaking alkaline cells. It will fizz and just dissolve it. I'd try that before boiling water tbh.

Apparently if you put 2 D Cell batteries in the 4D or 6 D it works like a slide hammer and hurts more. Apparently.Still got 2D, 3D and 4D, all still working fine, the 4D is next to the bed in case I need a "deterrent"
A police sergeant I knew in the 80's said the big D cell torches made an excellent alternative to a truncheon as they could put a car window through
I’ve got a few mag lites but don’t remember when any got used. Bought a LED Lenser P7 in Germany and thought it was brilliant until I dropped it and the LED cracked. Warranty department were obstructive so it never did get repaired.
Mate is a helicopter engineer. They bought a load of the rechargeable ones and docking stations to replace the mag lites. All failed in a matter of months. Back to maglites.
Police have now gone to pulsar (?) which fit the airwave bracket on the armour. Maglites are too heavy for health and safety, so I’m told.

I could see it working on lead acid batteries, but not on alkaline cells.

I got a drop in led unit for my 2d maglite, it’s brighter than the sun! Not horrifically expensive, I think 20ish quid at the time but I couldn’t tell you where from. Spot is phenomenal, I use it out the bedroom window to illuminate the clever sofa that haven’t noticed the sheep in the field when they take their dogs for a walk on the path. As with most leds flood isn’t great though. I nodded mine to take 2 18650 rechargeables and I would like to make a recharging cradle for the truck at some point as I just like the torch.
For something a bit bigger, the nightsearcher trios are a good unit, had them on SAR and they do the job great

Always been a fan of maglites and still am, just something I like about them even though they're not very useful as a torch, not free standing etc. They never seem to have been able to have cracked the solution to a long term functioning switch on the twist head of the AA model, always ends up going temperamental, I know you can get tail cap switch retrofits for them.
Had a 3D pre LED days and it got run over by a 7.5t. Came out with a scuff on the body but still worked perfectly.

I've got an old dragon light, heavy with a lead acid battery and a 50w halogen sealed beam lamp but a cracking torch.

Another thing I like about them is they're waterproof, I was changing the ballcock valve on a tank with just enough room to get my arms in due to a shelf above so I switched the 3D on and dropped it in the tank so I could see what I was doing.

About time I did that with my 3-cell Magalike. It's a really nice torch, but wasn't ever that good on bulb life, so bought an LED replacement when they were only just starting to show. It was pathetic, but I've never got around to replacing it with a more modern one since, just using it with the Krypton bulb and 3 cells.
Given I have a box of harvested 18650s that I've used in just about everthing else, this is due for some treatment. A bit of PVC pipe will do for a sleeve, and the existence of 4-12V LEDS as a straight drop-in makes it all the more feasible.
