Any Borehole Pump Experience on the Forum?

OK I sorted out the Honda petrol operated water pump so was able to run another test pumping session.

Same as before, this time with the suck pipe fully extended down the hole to just shy of 5 metres, and ran the pump until it was sucking on air. It turns out that the diameter of the hole significantly increases about two metres down - VERY hard to safely get a decent view of it but maybe increased from about 2'6" to maybe 6 foot or so.

Even lowering a 240 volt LED flood light on a rope didn't help over much!

It took 48 minutes to lower it to the foot valve level - a calculated 27.6 tons of water - yes I know my daily limit is 20 tons

Not anymore, they dredged a lot out and did a Mag sweep of the upper harbour.
So much came up, shame Ponds was closed.

Well I hope they're still there, plumbed in and wired up as last I heard the MOD was pretty insistent that they should be able to fight fires.

I had to cut out some concrete in the harbour in Jersey for a fire-fighting pump. The three they had went dry on the biggest spring tide once a year so they were worried about the possibility of there being a fire in the fuel terminal in that hour of that day.

Was a great 2 weeks' work, operating the machine controls from the surface whilst the divers did all the graft

We used to use Grundfos multistgae pumps suspended on Wellmaster hose with just a simple top plate to connect to . http://flexiblepipelines.co.uk/products/wellmaster/wellmaster-range/ A lot simpler than rigid pipework and only need a roller at the wellhead then tie off the top end to a truck and simply drive towards the bore to let it down , no crane needed.

Oxfam used to have them mounted on reels for emergency use

So 27 tons takes you down to the limit of your suction and that must be a fairly beefy pump to get down that far in a hourish

What doe interest me is how quickly it refilled as if it refilled quite quickly it makes my chosen pump a good choice

If it still hasn't refilled then it might be a submersible pump

I think if you came to me wanting a pump for your application i'd probably say

A DAB JET 82M or a 102M

Both of which have enough capacity to get you 60ltr a min

Saves the hassle of getting a pipe and electricity down the well as you just need a suction pipe

AND

As to your question about filters after seeing the water going back to a stream i really wouldn't bother

but if you really want then a 20" housing and a 25 micron filter will do the job

@awemawson that well is far too good to be something that isn't likely to create plenty of water. Looks to be a good result.

We have one just outside our door and when I was renewing the pipe a few years back I always made sure there was someone near and the dogs were inside plus had a rope tied to the back of the Discovery tow bar. Mine is only a few metres but the thought if falling down head first is always present in you mind.

The level is now back up to maybe 4 foot from the surface, but quite a bit of scum has risen up. Point me at a 20" housing and 25 micron filter please

BTW the 27 tons was to the limit of my suction hose - probably the Honda WD20X pump would do more once primed but I only had 15 foot of suction hose so barely half the Torricellian limit

A 20" housing is pretty standard so use your googlefue

As for the 102M

I would suggest you get a foot valve for the bottom of the suction line and don't forget to chuck a bucket of water into the discharge of the pump before you push go

Also if your plate cooler isn't providing enough back pressure to stop the pump from being overly rattly then stick in a valve after the cooler to throttle back until you get 2.5ish bar on the pump discharge
