OK I sorted out the Honda petrol operated water pump so was able to run another test pumping session.
Same as before, this time with the suck pipe fully extended down the hole to just shy of 5 metres, and ran the pump until it was sucking on air. It turns out that the diameter of the hole significantly increases about two metres down - VERY hard to safely get a decent view of it but maybe increased from about 2'6" to maybe 6 foot or so.
Even lowering a 240 volt LED flood light on a rope didn't help over much!
It took 48 minutes to lower it to the foot valve level - a calculated 27.6 tons of water - yes I know my daily limit is 20 tons
