There lies a problem with down stairs loos - the drain only needs to back up a couple of feet and you have a sewer flood from the loo. It’s one of the problems for houses that are at risk of flood - if the water level rises above any over-flow (or the loo bowl) the house ground floor will be filled with water/sewage. The drain for a washing machine or dishwasher could present a risk at a fairly low level.
Some years ago, now, we had a problem of the chamber filling and/or slow to drain. Not our property but further down. Most likely 40-50 years of people pouring melted fat down the drains, disposing of wet-wipes, sanitary towels, etc down the loo. Water utility scoured the drains from the far end of the street and problem disappeared.
When sewage disposal was via cess-pits/septic tanks, for each property, people were likely more careful about what they filled their system with. No wet wipes, disposable nappies, etc back then.
