You will probably never get very far with that compound, you need a good ATA (axle to axle) length and at 206 fps it is not really any faster than a reasonable recurve bow. It also seems to indicate it has a fixed draw length which will make it rather interesting to shoot unless you just happen to have that draw length yourself.

As I said cheap and local. Just wanted to be able to play with the lad over the next few weeks. On the hunt for something else. Fine for the garden.
As it happens the draw length is perfect for me. Sometimes fate smiles.

Any recommendations for compounds to watch for.

If you are looking at compound bows then you want to make sure they are all in good condition - a string failure can be quite dramatic and painful and to get a set of new strings and have them fitted is often over £80.

Compound bows are an expensive hobby, for a new target archery setup you are looking at the wrong side of £1k once you have purchased everything you need for a relatively entry level setup. The best thing you can do is go to an archery shop and have a chat and have a look at the kit you need, this will give you a far better idea than anything else.

To be honest I would get a second hand recurve kit and shoot that for several months first to build up the muscle strength and to get your draw length to stabalise (it normally increases a bit once you start shooting) and then look at compound bows otherwise you will need to keep making adjustments to the bow as you adapt to archery. Buying second hand recurve bows is also much simpler and safer, look for a few year old Sebastian Flute setup (do not buy wooden riser bows, go for aluminium) and get some cheap arrows - but the arrows need to be selected according to the bow draw weight and your draw length, again as you progress you will make changes and need to buy new arrows so do not spend much at first.

Indeed. Have doubts about foam targets hence wanting to build something more substantial.

I've got the compressed foam targets and my club uses them and it stops my 60lb Hoyt compound And. X10s

There is no way a high power compound should be shot in someones garden unless they have the required 250m distance to give the appropriate overshoot.

If a standard foam target will not stop it at 10m it should not be shot in an urban garden (even if it will I have my doubts)

For best bang for your buck look for the old merlin bows I just had to part with mine since it wasn't used after I got my new one it shot aswell as the day it was made in 2007 and they compete very good whith the new highend bows

I have a cheap Barnett 25lb draw weight fibreglass long bow and about 2 dozen arrows, half of which have whistling points on them.
It's a great way to let off steam and get the issues and problems of the day out of your system, and a draw weight of only 25lbs is perfect for our 100ft long back garden.

I have run a small archery club for over 20years now, always under the archery GB umbrella, But all shooting must comply with their rules, I have made quite a few targets in that time, Usually 50inches square for outdoor shooting made from layers of 6mm hard foam, compressed from 55Inches down to 50inches and around 14inches from front to back. they hold up very well, We are lucky because the targets are mounted on fixed stands and stay outside all year long only covered with a green tarpaulin, I have also made similar targets using cut strips of good quality carpet off-cuts, there are also 24 inch squares of old rubber conveyer belt hanging loosely behind the target centres, A few good archers will soon soften the target centres, Expanding builders foam injected between the layers works wonders when the centre does soften, and lasts a good while,

A good big backstop is essential, years ago a mate acquired a 40ld draw recurve bow, we set up a target in his garden which was several layers of heavy carpet hung over a scaffold tube, It worked fine until i had a shot, missed the target & the arrow hit the exposed edge of the scaffold tube & richocheted vertically into the sky. This was in the middle of a housing estate. Of course what goes up must come down & we watched from undercover as the arrow returned to earth in the road outside. We found it sticking in the grass verge next to a neigbours car. Not good.
On a related note does anyone still use Alloy arrows? I recently found an Arrowset arrow straightener If anyone wants it.

Grandson does as the carbon ones cost a fortune, he fletches them with a jig as well to save a bit more money.

I took up archery this year with my kids and would suggest that compounds in your garden is not a good idea. They are scarily powerful and would be no fun at the shorter distances. The lower power recurves could be ok but you do need to be careful of ricochets. My daughter is only pulling 22lbs and she had an arrow skip off the target set at 30m and we eventually found the arrow (with a metal detector) buried in the ground at 70m. I like shooting at the club because there is lots of support and I can try out all the different kit
