Antique or reproduction

Any furniture experts here? I bought a set of 8 dining chairs from an antique market, one of these places with lots of little outlets under one roof with absent sellers. The owner wasn't about so couldn't get any real info on the chairs, it doesn't really matter if antique or not as I would have bought them if they were advertised as new, but would be interesting anyway.

There are two carvers and 6 plain.

I'm not an expert: but the fact that the seats are carved from single piece of ?oak? is a pointer in my mind towards them being "of an age" -
wide boards are expensive, so more modern examples I've seen tnd to be made of either glued panels, or veneer.

Have a look underneath the table. If it is reproduction they probably stopped making it look so old underneath I would have thought. That's where the mask will slip anyway.

The inset emblem looks like it may be a thistle, makes sense as they were bought near Perth.

What do the dowels look like? The fact that it extends suggests to me that it is modern. When did that start being a thing?

I'm going to make an edumacated guess of around late 1940s - 1950s - the screws look machine made, and the reinforcing timbers look to be attached with a nail gun, rather than a hammer - that points towards manufacturing techniques developed during ww2.

The table and chairs may not be contemperaneous, of course...

More likely to be elm

I feel it has some age perhaps the table and chairs are different years?
Main point is it looks quality and you are happy is all that matters

It looks a bit modern rather than antique with that glue line to me

It is repro, nicely done. Styled like the Ercol stuff but not.
Seats are Elm but the figuring in the table top is Oak.

My gut feel says the table and chairs don't belong together and that both are reproduction, however they do look great together. Another tell tale is that there is not a single lose joint anywhere in the set.

just noticed something else in the first picture: the two halves of the table don't match - at all.
I think that an older piece would have been made from, if not a bookmatched pair of leaves, at least a better blend

Drill them wooden dowels out and i bet you find Torx screws behind them...only joking mate its a very nice table and chair set to be honest old or new.

Yes, I went out looking for a rustic farmhouse kitchen type table but ended up with this instead.
