Quite rare, they were optional extras at the time and were soon superceded by the new-fangled bipods & tripods. Another case where newer isn't always better.
I had a look on google for an image to confirm it but the nearest I can find is called a "Selfie stick" - they serve a vaguely similar purpose so the original design has lasted well over a century. Impressive !

That's a genius one and I suspect the best yet.

Either that or a posh bubble blower. For kids that went to posh school and didn't have to ask for a hamster by starting on a horse and negotiating their way down. My wife, for example - she'd have had a bubble blower like that. And she got the horse first time...
