yeah, mild steel, but that's just the nature of it, they are work boats hauling crab pots, servicing mooring chain, pulling all sorts of crap.I'd be tempted to cut the channel as accurately as you can, place on gunwale, small minimal holding tacks with arc, remove, place on quay/or boat with big bit of something i.e. Ply to protect fiberglass from spatter. Tack it to hold it properly, then arc or take home and tig.
What are the chains made of? Mild steel will infect stainless, and it will start to rust. Infect is not the right word obviously.
Pictures tell a thousand words.yeah, mild steel, but that's just the nature of it, they are work boats hauling crab pots, servicing mooring chain, pulling all sorts of crap.
When I say channel it's kinda custom channel, not cut from a length. Imagine cutting 2 side plates that get bolted through the gunwale and then place a piece on top to cap it. It's kinda hard to explain in text. I might take some pictures
probably something like 4mmPictures tell a thousand words.
If it's going to be abused with steel chain, for economy, v the joints, arc it, sand it flat with a flap disk.
No ones going to appreciate pretty tig welds, covered in rust from chains.
What thickness channel will this be ?
Once again, tigging is a more expensive process due to the gas factor.
If it's purely functional, arc it, sand it flat, job done.
No, I don't think so, just a question of amps and penetration.probably something like 4mm
I was just thinking that any chance to practice would be worthwhile with the tig.
Is there any strength difference between them?
Sorry, went off topic I’ve been looking at the 15% Argon/CO2 for MIG just surprised by the price15% mix of what ? You just want pure argon not any sort of mixed gas, unless your using Helium for some strange reason.
is there any difference in price between SGS agents?Sgs gases.
I used to get mine through the motorfactors,
Partservice and mpd. (For 10-20l)
But now use denleys in honiton as they stock the 30+50l rent free sgs bottles.
Apparently they can charge what they want.is there any difference in price between SGS agents?
I paid the same for a 30l 15% mix for MIG (SGS) as @Ruffian showed on his SGS price list. Mine was from Leamco autofactors...
Is Honiton the cheapest for deposit? Or are you only going there for the larger bottles?Yes but that is a price from the distributor I use in honiton (circa 15miles from where the OP is)

Unit arrives Monday, still not sure if its overkill for my needs. Got the weekend to try and keep justifying it to myself.
Was that eBay helmet I linked to earlier the right one? Don't wanna end up with a cheap duff one.
Exactly, seems there must be some standardisation if we have the same prices many miles apart...Yes but that is a price from the distributor I use in honiton (circa 15miles from where the OP is)
Tungstens come in different flavours and sizes, you'll need matching collets for the tungstens , and then ceramic cups. That's about it apart from filler rods. I think.
Stainless tungsten and alu tungsten are different, but you can buy tungsten with cover anything, I believe, but I can't remember the name, people have raved about them, Huntingdon multi strike?
My memory is a bit crap at the moment.
Well, I've taken it out of the box now,
