Another curious eBay find

Some kind of drilling head thing.

Anyone ever seen one before? Anyone know how it works? I can't how they feed downwards and the item description doesn't help. It's certainly an interesting thing isn't it.

Never seen one of those before but it looks to me that the input is on the top shaft and the blue collar is to support it on a tool post of a pillar drill or something! I take it they all drill together at the same time, it must be for pipe flanges or something similar to get an identical set of holes on both sides, or for making lots of the same item! That's my thoughts anyway!

I cannot think of a situation where you would need six operations on a single 'hole'. Three sets of drill/countersink or counterbore, seems logical.

It looks like it indexes and each drill chuck is operated by the pillar above to the front.

For it to drill them all together the forces are all in the wrong place apart from the front drill chuck.

Spot drill, little drill, bigger drill, reamer, countersink, tap? I agree, it's a bit excessive, especially considering they're only 1/4" chucks. A Burgmaster has 6 spindles, now they are cool.

You must have more than one hole to machine.

Spot drill...for 1/4 drill... doubtful
Little drill....see above
Reamer...possible
Countersink/ counterbore....possible but not in conjunction with the above.
TAP...excess intake of DoubleBoost..

I did not check the link you gave. Should have.Nice thin, and would have its' uses, a sort of capstan for a drill.

Maybe you have a drill, a countersink then a taper, plug and bottoming tap and a spare spindle to do whatever you want with. I think it's more likely for drilling several different sized holes.

I had a wee look at this and agree it's an indexed head for multi tooling. I have seen similar tools where all chucks are driven at once-for drilling dowels holes in wood though. A tool where you could change the radius of the circle would be nice-4 hole plates or pipe flange heaven!

Had one in an old workshop I was in many years ago, it was setup to drill for the two most common sizes used for mould packers for slotted and crank top fence posts.

When mould making we had to drill out for 6, 8, 9 10 and 11 foot post lengths for each channel of the mould (8 channels per mould), then drill out the packers to adjust the working length for each type of post.

Some parts being drilled have more than one size of hole or type of drilling operation so it could be handy for that.

Its a carousel for rapid tool changing for a dp as above, and when you have to make more than about 10 of something, the need for it becomes very clear indeed. Drill, counterbore, relief, tap with a tapping head etc without even having to stop the spindle as it probably disengages the spindle drive when the dp retracts too. Id rehome it if the circumstances fitted.
This all goes on inside a cnc nowadays and that carousel would be rotated by a stepper or servo setup and triggered by a specific code in the gcode, but production line dedicated machines and mechanical automation to make tasks easier existed long before anyone joined a computer to the machine. Even today a well ran screw lathe could keep pace with and probably outpace a cnc machine doing the same job.

Thing that immediately occurred to me was for drilling holes on a fixed PCD for brake discs or wheels.

Or 187 amps mains input current!

Bargain there for someone in need of a big SAW or gouging set.

I installed a new Mag Particle Inspection unit for a certain ejection seat maker in Oxfordshire and that needed a 145A supply, which was a bit of a bu993r as the factory incomer was only rated for 200A; it didn't leave a lot for the rest of the machinery, lighting, offices, heating etc...
