Really depends how a rotating tool is used, a guard can easily become a trap point dragging a finger, tool or workpeice in, I did this with a brand new wheel on a bench grinder the wires are much sharper than an old wheel, took most of the layers of skin of the back of my finger.

I use a general purpose wood rip saw with hardened teeth I bought cheap at a local builders merchants over a decade ago when I was doing the house up - cut all sorts with it and just keeps going - goes through fibreglass like, well, a sharp toothed saw through fibreglass.

I've never felt the need to remove the gaurd from a grinder other than a variable speed grinder with a velcro backing pad fitted to it that's only ever run at low speeds.
Even if I didn't think removing it was dangerous, I can't think of any occasions where having it fitted was a significant inconvenience. The portion of the blade that's covered by the gaurd isn't a part of the blade I ever feel the need to use.
