your landy must be held together with rivets ....think i'd buy lazy tongs or air operated ...

it certainly is! i also treat them as a removable fastener, so most get drilled out put back in, drilled out, put back in etc

got a lazy tongue, but i cant use ot for the tight spots... which tends to be most of them!

also got one of these (though not the same brand) which makes life a lot easier... though they do take more effort to pop the rivets (hence more chance of pain when fingers are caught)

I think the maximum recommended cup wire brush is 60mm for a 115mm grinder. I sometimes use a 7" knotted wire on a 9" - now that is a beast and demands respect! Cleans up pipework butts a treat though. W/A

A few of the 115mm grinders will take 125mm discs. Mine does.
As for guard removal, i have never had the need to remove one to use it in a tight spot.
Some of the guards can be a bit on the big side, usually the ones with half the underside of the disc covered in.
If you still need to take it off, buy a die grinder instead.

I used one of them knotty jobs, not even checking the max rpm, assuming that because it was advertised for a 4 1/2" grinder it would be okay. luckily I had goggles and gloves and coveralls on, as when it exploded, straightened out the steel cup bit, locked up my grinder and flung steel wire everywhere I was quite well protected.

I then looked at the max rpm on the remains of the case and saw 9000rpm stamped on it. My grinder said 10,000 rpm, so obviously there is absolutely no 'safety margin' built in.

I spent some money on a wire brush marked 13,000rpm and it did the job, taking all the loose scrappy mortar off the outside of my new garage. (I'm useless at concrete block laying) The dust was incredible though, and I ruined my new spectacles wiping the dust off with a rag, scratched them to bits. Even with the plastic safety goggles over them the dust still got in.

Have just come back from hospital (for a check up on some pins in my arm) but met a bloke in there that was recieving phyiso for his right leg. He was usig a 9" widow maker WITHOUT the guard on and it jumped, bounced and then went through his right quad muscles He had his leg rebuilt 6 months ago but he now has a perminat limp
I think thats a perfect lesson in what happens if you take the guards off.

yeah, you don't have to be too careful about putting them down too - wish all power tools were as tough as air tools

I prefer electric tools, air tools just dont seem to have the power to stand the abuse they get.


For adjusting speed on an electric one, press harder!

At least I wasn't using a cutting disc.....

I knew a broad that WAS using a cutting disc. The poorly designed grinder (DeWalt) slipped out of her hands and went across 3 fingers on her left hand, severing one. Needless to say there's still blood stains of the floor where that happened.

i was always under the impression that dewalt were quite good. certainly out of my price range.

these days i get most of my power tools from argos (grinder, drill, die grinder etc)

for a fiver you can get a 3 yr return and replace thing, so every month or two when it breaks i getr a brand new one, no questions asked (even if i ******** it doing something silly, or just dropped it etc). you also get a whole new set of accessories such as grinding discs every time too! bargain

There was a thread running a while ago on this subject. DeWalt is the "professional" brand name of Black and Decker.

I don't buy cheap tools (anymore) for several reasons.
1. They break far too easy and I'd rather spend time on my projects than have to spend several hours going for a replacement.
2. When they do work, they usually don't work that well.
3. I'd rather not financially support Chinese sweatshops if possible.

Using quality tools in the first place makes everything quicker, gives better results and is less of a hassle to get a job done.
