But if they were really talented nice guys then why would they let themselves get sucked into the TV set up rubbish, im sure they make enough money without the show, so its not like they need it ?

They seem so willing to be fake for tv when they are really talented, the two dont seem to go together usually.

I'm afraid you have no idea of what its like really, Building cars in the states isn't the massive bucks you think it is, most guys are only earning $600-700 a week, work out the conversion its not as much as you think !!!

They play act because of the money offered by the TV companys, Its far more lucrative than actually working for it. Plus of course its not all the year around.

To be honest American Hotrod hasn't been good for Hotrodding, Its has tempted in to the hobby people that just like to play at it really, Ive built expensive cars for some of these people and i've never seen the cars again at any shows etc

They just stay in locked garages which is such a waste.

Also the fact that on tv the cars get built in 8 weeks don't help (they don't really, its more Tv bull), I can't tell you how many customers have asked why their hand crafted car isn't done in 8 weeks !!!

Also most of the cars built by Boyd will cost in the region of $400,000 plus, Not so stupid was he

Just good business i would say There were people queeing up to have a car built there.
I always found him to be a quite kind man and he always made us welcome, however he was known as a very shrewd businessman, definitly not whiter than white

I can't comment on his will and even if i knew still wouldn't.

i am sure it would be far more interesting watching someone with skill forming a complex panel by hand rather than watch some git chuck his tools across the workshop & stomp off in a huff because someone said a nasty thing about his idea....

Just watched a program about the ford dagenham plant on bbc 4 and i have to say it was excellent, plenty of shots of the building of the cars, the production lines, foundry , machine shops and talking to all sorts of people involved in it.

No Sean I'm not involved, I got contacted by the producers initially because of my 30 years in the film/tv business and was gonna be involved but it would of meant me being away from my customers stuff too long and that wouldn't have been fair on them, I was very interested though once the setup had been explained.
They had a pretty decent workshop setup but I was surprised to hear that the product placement wasn't very good, a lot of the tool & machinery companies were not interested in getting involved.

Mike the problem is that 90% of the audience are not enthusiasts so therefor have to be entertained just the way of the world these days I'm afraid.

Unlike OCC where they change their alleigence every few years when another tool company gives them 000's of dollars worth of tools and asks them to build a bike I wonder what happens to the "old" tools?

well a friend/client of mine appeared on one of the OCC episodes and he said the whole thing stunk of money. He was surprised anything got done because the whole 3 day shoot revolved around "quiet please, rolling" whilst they set up the pre written shots. Away from the filming, it was apparently night and day but he said he sensed an underlying atmosphere between senior and Paulie.
