Ze germanz are trialling electric HGV with overhead pickup wires, similar to trolley buses on a short stretch of autoroute.

Germany: Coal tops wind as main electricity source – DW – 09/13/2021
In the first half of 2021, coal shot up as the biggest contributor to Germany's electric grid, while wind power dropped to its lowest level since 2018. Officials say the weather is partly to blame.

Shipping, agriculture, remote power generation and a few other industries will be getting exemptions. Battery/electric power is never going to run agricultural/forestry equipment that can be miles off the beaten track running up to eighteen hours a day.

So true but for a maritime nation the UK as a whole port capacity is shockingly bad there would have to be huge investment to move cargo seaward, is still the most efficient way of moving cargo from a to b.

Dont under stand pursuing self driving vehicles what are a whole load of people going to do for a job, same with self serve checkouts etc etc. All well and good saying oh they can go do something else but what exactly. Mass unemployment coming in the future if everything goes automated. Lots of jobs for the technicians and service engineers but not everyone is smart enough to do these jobs.

Like why why else would the intercity 125 still be in service more than 40 years after it was first built and the electric 225 superceded it.

I’m not sure it’s all just down to power supply - the cost of electrifying a whole rail line is pretty big and takes a long time as well - so I’d guess that is the main reason. A mate was project manager for network rail on the electrification of east cost main line (I think, or one of the main routes at least) - it took years to complete.

Yep Round trip to India on one ship I was on use to burn 24000 tons of heavy fuel oil. No battery can store that amount of energy not in the short space of time ships stay in port.

True but if we are wanting to be greener and the point the environmentalists don't seem to grasp is we cannot afford it. Nobody can.
Power supply is still an issue though we only have the capacity to generate/import 5% more power than we currently use which is a rather scary ily small Margine, so at the moment we aren't far off selective power outages and brown outs to maintain more critical areas of supply.

I’m not disputing that but highlighting the fact that it takes a long time to change a part of infrastructure. So it’s not surprising that 125 trains are still being used as it wasn’t as if the network was ready for them to be replaced instantly, even more so when they started the electrification process decades ago when the green agenda wasn’t even really a thing.

Will be way before 2040 for buying new. The new Mercedes eActros will run from one end of England to the other(well Exeter to Manchester at least), has over 500hp and will charge 80% in an hour, plugged in at a distribution warehouse bay and it will be more time efficient than using petrol stations. Admittedly the Mercedes’ does have some major drawbacks still, for example it’s only a 25t payload rigid rather than a proper lorry but that’s ready now.
By 2040 the whole cab will be replaced by batteries/fuel cells and nobody will know what a lorry driver is
That comment made me - an old man smile - it amused me no end!
But it does raise the "social question" - what will everybody do for work/income...?
When you do away with lorry/taxi/bus/train/van drivers....

I had a meeting with a DNO this week, remember I work for a company that makes and installs heat pumps. One of my current projects is a 500kw system in a leisure centre.
Anyway, another project next year is even bigger, around 1MW and the start up current is significant, after we had finished the official meeting I asked about this, they are already spending millions upgrading the network, it isn't in danger of "falling over", a beloved term of Daily Mail readers.
A slightly smaller project in a school needs a supply upgrade, we only have to pay for the cable as the area is already getting substation upgrade
I dont know where the belief the grid is still running the cables installed after ww2 and has never been upgraded comes from

Agreed, battery powered cargo ships are not currently even remotely viable, however, FF’s are not the only option.
The obvious possibility is to go the way of subs and use your favourite source, nuclear.
Of course this isn’t new, the Russians have been operating LASH from 1988 right up to today. Let alone all the military ships.
Shipping is a significant problem so it does need to be addressed, nuclear of course is not without downsides so how about wind power, needs a bit of work and certainly has its own major downsides but not quite as crazy as it first sounds…

Thats pretty much the case in a lot of rural locations, there are thousands of miles of ancient overhead and buried cables in service not fit for purpose. Before I replaced the cables to this place the fly cutter on the mill would make the lights flicker in about twenty local properties. I sorted my end out thirty years ago but the others are still fed off a tiny lead sheathed supply that must have been installed after the war.
