Personally, I've never had that problem upto just, that I can recall. I have several cheap tapes knocking about here and there, (I tend to leave one everywhere I may need to do the occasional bit of measuring, just incase I forget my main tape), and they've all been working fine for years.

I have an El cheapo home base "value" range one that I must have had for 10 years, still going strong. Don't think I'd fork out too much money for something that gets kicked around, dropped and generally abused. To be honest the general feel of it doesn't seem too much different to a Stanley one at probably 5 x the cost.

yup, the magnets on a tape can either be a godsend or a nuisance.

But don't make the same mistake as me when using magnetic tapes... when making a large framework out of 100mm box- remember that the tape end is now on the INSIDE edge of the box

in my job i class tapes as consumables so the Aldi type brands are perfect..even better are the pack of pencils they have just sold,bought 5 packs

there not those poxy ones you find at the bookies are they...the aldi ones are nice big fat gorrila ones with a free sharpener that never works right.
