As a hobby machinist, is it worth paying a relatively large amount for an Albrecht keyless chuck for my lathe (L5A) or would one from RDG/Chronos be just as good for occasional work?
B13 or B16Btw,what’s the short taper called on the spindle nose of pedestal mc,I need a new chuck on 1 of mine.
Just checked, I paid £80 for my three.I have three Albrechts, all cost less than £30. You have to keep your eyes open![]()

B13 or B16
It is for a lathe I think so presume it will be a morse taper.Maybe it is worth noting to anyone who might be interested in these that the B-taper in them is relatively modern and relatively non-UK or US.
So if you have an older drill press, these are unlikely to fit.
See above. Mr Nickk would need to give more details of his machine. If it is of UK-origin and old, it is most likely a Jacobs taper on the spindle. If it is a B&Q special from the last 20 years, it could well be a B-taper.

Yours not have holes for a pin spanner? Sure all mine do but...I have a small Albrecht on the mill, rather like it, and Rohm as on the lathe are pretty good IMHO, Chinese are ok too but seem more likely to lock up and need a channel-lock and leather pads to get undone...

use my dewalt drill evey day .the drill bits never slip and its real fast to change . a keyed chuck would be crap and slowI've never used a keyless chuck that works anywhere near as well as a keyed chuck. Either they don't grip tight enough or they are too tight & jam, needing a pipe wrench to open them!
Whats so hard about using a decent keyed chuck, grips tight every time & if its on a fixed item like a pillar drill you can put the key on a string so it doesn't get lost.
IMHO keyless chucks are only for cordless drills & they don't work well on them either!
