A couple of the £100 plus mini diesel 4 kw heaters to blast out hot air when you need it m you can use extra heat resisting pipes to pipe the heater air to so many areas .

0.5 litres per heater per hour or so mid range heat , The don't take a lot of time or make mess to install them. Most local fuel delivery companies can / do supply heating oil in 45 gallon barrels if you ask them .


Just got a notification, the one I purchased off eBay supposed to be here 19 Dec , seller told me a few min ago it is out of stock, but three days ago I've already had a notification it has been dispatched and collected via Evri and is out for delivery

I think / hope it is because I contacted the seller asking what height the fuel pump could draw fuel up to & not reading English just hit the normal Chinese " No stock " reply button

Suffolk Trading Standards Imports Surveillance Team have detained 973 diesel heaters at the Port of Felixstowe over the last two months

All products were found to be unsafe, with listings for all sellers removed on eBay. Consignments arrived at the Port in October and November and were stopped

Each of the products did not meet the requirements of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 because they could present the hazards of fire and death due to poor supporting installation information.
Manuals supplied with the products failed to give measurements for installing and did not give the minimum distance the exhaust pipe can be installed from flammable material, or material that could give off poisonous fumes when heated, such as insulation material.
No warning was provided about heat and dangers to the user if installed incorrectly.
Large parts of the manuals were written in poor English and had incorrect words used. The intended meaning was, in some cases, difficult to understand.
Additionally, the products and instructions did not have the name and address of the importer or manufacturer, and did not included the required Declaration of Conformity (DoC). A DoC is a formal declaration by a manufacturer, or the manufacturer’s representative, that the product to which it applies meets all relevant requirements of all product safety directives applicable to that product.
If you have purchased a product that you think may be unsafe, stop using it immediately and report it to Trading Standards via Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133

Are these windows with double glazed panes or windows with secondary double glazing? The latter is better than the former.

Our lounge window (at the front), and patio door (at the rear), are double glazed panes but with secondary glazing (making them triple glazed). This provides a welcome reduction of heating costs/ heat loss.

Something to explore, I'd worry that the venting that the felt brushes in the sashes provides would be blocked. Black mould and so forth.

Where they're fitted and struggle they will just try and run all the time. Ideally a low energy heating system gets the property to temperature and the heat losses through the building fabric are low and slow, otherwise the "boiler" or whatever will just short cycle.

A lot of british houses have been built to never stay warm. Just get the air inside them hot ASAP so you can get out of bed/sit down after tea and repeat. The likes of smart hive systems play into this mentality. The alternative is keeping the whole house warm all the time, very hard with a heat pump if the house is leaky. Also won't work if you try to use the hp as a quick temperature boost either.

Little point. Onshore wind planning restrictions are quite clear. Unless you build it as a community energy scheme, or it falls within permitted development rules (which it sounds like the one in question won't) it's a non starter. Government are under pressure to U-turn, even from their own back benchers, but it's a policy they campaigned for, way back when.

No permission needed for wind turbine's in some places, having an existing air source heat pump is one of the criteria for needing permission.

I think (might be wrong) but a heat pump installation actually makes you ineligible for a turbine! Madness.




OP, a small woodburner would supplement a heat pump that struggles in coolest times well. Wouldn't worry about plumbing it in, just let the mvhr mover the air around. If you don't have an mvhr system, consider that too!

Does anyone know what temperature the water in the now closed deep coal mines is? Lots of old pits in this area, surely that heat is recoverable.

There would need to be a very skewed distribution for the average not to be around 50%.

It's a bell curve distribution , most are in the mid whit category and a small amount above and below.

Trouble is there are loads around who would believe what you posted. From cattle below, the metane content above will never reach an explosive concentration - the methane will dissipate to the exterior just as quickly as it is replaced with more warm air from below. The old roofs were not that impermeable, either.

Certainly not worth discusding gurther.

The ammonia produced from urine on dung and straw would be as damaging to human lungs

Does anyone know what temperature the water in the now closed deep coal mines is? Lots of old pits in this area, surely that heat is recoverable.

About 50 oF or 10 oC ( IIRC from my potholing days as a young man ) but most of it needs some serious extraction pumps to lift it hundreds of metres up out the pit or to to some where dry for the heat pump to extract the heat .
I suspect though it's more sensible & economical to lower a very long continuous filled coiled loop pipe down into the mine. So that all you needed was to push the heat extracted cold water back down the pipe to use less power .

When I looked into such things about 40 years go, they were recommending a 90 mtr vertical bore of 700 mm with the curled ( like a spring) filled coiled pipe for a 10 kw heat pump if you didn't have the land to excavate a 2 mtr x 2 mtr deep trench system several hundred mtrs long for pair of over lapping laid in continuous coils water pipe system .

Saw a innovative self build program Sky TV 10 or more years ago where the guy had about nine 90 foot deep bore holes in the ground under the footprint of the floor slab .
Into which he inserted fuse welded alkathene water pipe coils inside rebar frames and then had them lowered down the holes . Putting a mtr dia or so wellhead pipe shield at the top, then took all the now insulated water pipes back to the manifold area and back filled the borehole voids with a lean mix liquid concrete .

IIRC his biggest heating & hot water bill was less than a tenner a quarter .. but his novel extraction set up cost him around £130 K

Haven't read the whole thread, but I've seen good info and downright nonsense

UK heat pump should have a scop of at least 2 when it's -3, it should work perfectly fine down to -5, only needing the immersion when temps drop below this

I'm no longer doing domestic but I have around 15 schools running air source heat pumps. My laptop has been on the BMS monitoring page constantly and we have had 2 that needed the immersion for the hot water. 1 used it's gas boiler yesterday but the internal temps dropped, turns out they had a concert and left the main doors open

Very hard to diagnose the problem on here, I'd expect a domestic system to cope in these conditions though

Tempted to think you guys don't get access to the better heatpumps we do in the nordics. I mean they're on like every other house here and people like them. Or your houses need to be better insulated.
