I picked up some gas today from Air Products, I asked for Co2 Argon mix - BOC Argon Sheild Light equivalent. They gave me Argon Technical, I asked a couple of times if this was a CO2 Argon mix and they confirmed it was, but I have a feeling its just Argon
Where do I stand with this? I have used a very small amount from the bottle, even when putting it in the boot of the car I asked him again if it was a mix and he assured me it was. Also whats the price of Cougar 5?
Also with me being a total noob at welding, whats problems would it cause using Argon on mild steel?
Holox/Linde/Air Products did the same to me. I ashed for Argon mix for MIG. "Yeah argon". No MIG gas. "ok".
Got home and was pure argon.
I used it up, It ill work fine with a real nice stable arc. but the welds will be a bit cold and tall. Penetration is narrow. Was nice for thin stuff if you don't mind a lot to grind down.
I'd say if you're not happy, take it back as it does sound like you were given the incorrect gas. Pure argon apparently burns hotter than argon/co2 mix and will produce a taller weld. Although argon will shield the arc ok, the weld won't flow as nicely as one made using mixed gas. Regardless of whether you've used any or not, you should still be given what you originally asked for .
Can't help with prices other than say if there's an air liquide dealer near you, give them a try instead, they did me a fantastic deal on pure argon and argon/co2 mixes, I'd been with air products for years until I got a quote from A/L.
Thanks for the help, I'm signed up now with Air Products so I'll have to stick with them now?
From what I've read on the forum what I paid for a 10kg bottle was quiet high compared to the mix bottles. Just wondering if I would get some money back. The majority of my welding will be car panels so the mix would be better?, just a pain as the dealer is 15 miles away, costing me for there cock ups
You would be best off with cougar 5 (5% co2) for thin stuff like bodywork.
You should get a refund on the one you've got and just pay for the new one, I'd still see if you've got an air liquide dealer near you as well though.
Have you paid for a year's rental in advance or did you get the gas on a daily contract? If daily then you're not tied to them so you can take it back at any time and end the contract.
I thought I'd seen a gas comparison section on here somewhere and here it is.
Pob, you were mis-sold! You asked for a product and were given the wrong one! You should be able to get everything back from them. Ring them up if you don't get any joy from the supplier, I guarantee they'll sort you out ok, you may even get something like a months free rental as an apology.
As the old saying goes 'if you don't ask, you don't get' .
Something like that, id imagine they will say its down to you to check it before loading.
Might be worth a phone call though.
With the new bottle colours, its made it confusing. They were clearly identyfiable at a glance before they changed. Now just a slightly darker shade of green on the top and thats it.
All the welding gases are now grey with a green top, Astec, Prodarc, Argon, Coogar, Ferromaxx, inomaxx, alumaxx... easy to see why they got confused.
Always check the label yourself.
I know what your saying Hitch, but I asked for an Argon CO2 mix and they assured me three times it was, It my first time getting gas from a supplier so I don't know thier names for it.
I took the bottle back today, they told me because I broke the seal on the bottle I may get charged for using it?! Yeah right, I got a email from Air Products and they said I wouldn't get charged
Cancelled the agreement with them, Not even a 'Sorry' from the agent I delt with, they were trying to makeout It was my fault.
