air/hydraulic tube bender

I bought the plans for this recentlywww.gottrikes.com Was just wondering if anybody here has had a go at building one and if so where did they get the air over hydraulic ram from? I can't seem to find one in any UK based hinternet company but just thought maybe you guys might know where I could pick one up?

If not it's no biggy I have to oder the dies from the states anyways, and I know I can get one from the good ole US of A so I'll just get them shipped together.

Anyway here's my work so far, all the bits to complete the frame and swing arm just gotta have the bushes turned and finish welding, then I'm ready for the ram and dies

There is a few places you could try Enerpac being the best bet or Machine Mart do a Air hyd pump & have various power rams.

Why do you have to order the dies from the states? cant a local machine shop make them?

Rogm: thanks for the reply, I've already tried machine mart, no good there, this bender was designed around already cheaply available rams and dies (available in the states anyway) the rams can be bought quite cheap in the states but just wondered if anybody knew where I might get one in this country?

As for the dies, yes I probably could get them made here if I had specs for them, the plans don't include specs for dies, as you're meant to buy the ones from Protools in America for which this machine was designed.

Here you can get rams cheap from Northern Tools.

They have a UK branch. Look under Automotive Equipment, Hydraulic Bottle Jacks. For manual ones.

They also have a section on hydraulics with cylinders.

They used to supply me with custom made cylinders for Hydraulic box tippers that I used to build, you'll need to give them some specification such as stroke and bore, double or single action, fitting size and position, and what ram head fittings needed, but they are very good at working from "fag packet" sketches

Can you give me an idea of the cost of the dies and the ram if bought in from the US. I was looking at these plans with interest, and maybe we could split shipping if we purchased together? It all depends on what the cost of the dies are, I do not want to order up the plans to then find that the dies are prohibitively expensive.

Bonepyro: the dies are available from these guys http://www.pro-tools.com and vary in price depending on what size and radius you're after, the rams are commercially available from a few internet based dealers I've found but most of them seem to be in the states or Australia, just not been able to find one here yet.

As regards sharing the shipping costs, good idea but I'm off to Australia in a couple of weeks and don't plan on returning anytime soon so that rules that out.

The plans if you do order them are really detailed and if complete numpty like me can work em out anybody can! it helps if you've some basic fabrication skills and some basic equipment at you're disposal but other than that a peice of cake

hi, what about using the hydruallic ram from a engine lift, you get replacement part from mmart or i believe au has something simular to harbour frieght

you're on the right track but the motorcycle lift ones are too short, the one I need is from an engine hoist I think its about 600mm in length and has a 500mm stroke if memory serves, someone in the UK must stock em I just don't know where to look

Have you checked Northern tools? They show 68 different versions including telescopic ones.

doesn't that mean you need the air motor bit onto a longer stroke ram

Jamesb: hard to say exactly how much so far, but lets see, £65 to have all the shapes cut out of 1/2" plate on a CNC plasma cutter, the 50 x 50 x 5mm box section I already had left over from a previous job but I'm guessing would cost around £40, and the rest upto now I've managed to beg, steal and borrow from some of my contacts in local engineering firms, I guess those bits might come to another £30 - £40

Then there's the hydraulic ram and dies which I've yet to order but the price of them doesn't appear that restrictive, I've decided to wait until we get to Australia to order up the air/hydraulic ram as a quick search on Ozzy Ebay revealed that they're readily available there for about $80 (£40) and once settled I'll order the dies from pro tools in the states $200 ish (£80-100 ish)

So I guess if you add all that up it could poss be £300+ by the time I've finished, I could probabley have bought something for that but hey, where's the fun in that? right?!!!

Norm, what is an air over hydraulic ram?

I know what an air powerered hyd pump is, but you've got me lost.

Simondrains: the same thing as far as I can figure, I'm using American terminology here! it's an air driven pump which operates the hydraulic ram but you can also use the ram exactly how you would use say a bottle jack with a lever.

I could get hold of just a plain old hydraulic one here no trouble because they're the ones used in most engine hoists from place such as Machine Mart, but nobody here seems to do the air operated ones.
