Still lost mate - Rusty69's link shows an air powered hydraulic pump. There's no such beast as an air powered hydraulic ram (is there?), as that would be a pneumatic ram. So surely, you need a plain old hydraulic ram, and an air powered hyd pump. Sorry if i'm being thick...

Are you saying that there is also a hydraulic ram that has the pump/air wotnot contained within it as a complete unit? (in which case, I have to say, what a good idea!)

Si, we heve the air-powered rams here. Basically a standard bottle pump with what is similar to an air drill motor attached as a pump.

My motorcycle lift had the option for about $10 more.

If you go to http://www.gottrikes.com and view the plans for the air/hydraulic bender and or the video you'll see what I need, yes that bottle jack is air/hydraulic but unfortunatly too short for my needs.

Check out the gottrikes website and you'll see what I mean.

I'll ask again, have you tried Northern tools. They have dozens of jacks and RAM's.

Here is one. They have them from 6" to 30".

You are quite right pneumatic rams are air powered, all they do is used compressed air to drive an icicle pump to power the oil, so still hydraulic cylinders, Does save some pumping, but no substitute on Real mans hydraulics, grrrr power....

Shen, Northern tools do have air/hydraulic presses, but their UK website doesn't show individual air/hyd rams. Can be frustrating when people take no notice, eh?

They have regular hydraulic cylinders that you need an external pump. They also have body/frame puller cylinders and pumps that might work.

Here in the US, NT has lots of the type you need. Made by Blackhawk or Torin, I don't see either on the UK site. NT here is what everybody here uses for DIY presses, lifts etc and also farm hydraulics.

If you go to their store, they have many things not in their online catalog.

made some more progress today, pretty much finished up the frame, just need to weld the jack mounting tabs on, wheels on the front and a handle on the back, then get the pins and bushes turned and its finished (oh and paint it!)

Theres a place here in Adelaide (Aust) called Pneucube thats sells the air over oil setups. we're currently retro fitting a setup to a machine that uses a ram to move a gear rack that turns a gear and spins the mandrel to bend spring steel.

the setup has no hydraulic pump, just a tank in which the oil is stored, compressed air is fed into the top and the oil is forced out of the bottom of the tank, oil then travels to one side of the piston.

the idea of this setup is to keep ram speed constant, eliminating stalling when load is increased. constant ram speed also increases acuraccy, essential for when bending tube for chassis.

To my knowledge any air ram can be used in this setup, the only modification to the ram side of things is that a hydraulic seal is needed on the side of the piston that sees the oil.

hope this helps a bit. can try get photos of the setup at work if you want.

the tube bender was designed around a commercialy available air/hydraulic ram so for it to work correctly I need said ram, it would appear that for some reason they are not so common in old blighty, however, in about 4 weeks time me and the family are off to start a new life in Oz (perth actually) and I know I can get them there so I'll probably just wait for now untill we touch down.
