No. They have no powers of restraint. They can tell you to stay where you are until a police officer arrives, but won't actually stop you from walking off.

They truly are a load of **** though.. When I was at college a PCSO was in the process of ticketing me for parking on the street (legally) and because my tax disc had fallen off the window (due to it being 30C in the height of summer)

I drove off as he was writing the ticket and didnt here anything back.

Didnt know about the taking photos of the officers of the law, especially when sliding down hills on their riot shields I suppose.
It would probably cause them more trouble for doing the wrong things.

PCSOs have no power of arrest, for them to lay a hand on you other than to prevent harm or defence to themselves or another can be classed as assault, unless they can give good cause.
If they 'physically' detain you, they have the same rights and (perils) as an ordinary citizens arrest, I took such action where I live when someone was battering a girl outside my front door, he tried to say I had assaulted him by detaining him, but I only used proportinate force and called for the police instantly.

No, it's not illegal to take photos of coppers, no matter how much they want you to believe it. The specific piece of legislation is that you may not take photos of coppers who are or have been involved in anti-terror activities. That is a very small number of them, and they would have to prove that you knew they had been involved in anti-terror stuff; an almost impossible task for them

It's also not illegal to film your own kids at school sports days and plays.

This sort of behaviour from the Polis really annoys me and undermines their relationship with the public. There have been so many cases like this, and each time the top brass say "ooh, we will learn our lesson, we will make sure all our officers know the law", and then it happens all over again and again.

And how exactly would these new laws have stopped them, indeed how many times have they actually been used to thwart an attack and how many successful convictions have been processed under these new powers?

Perhaps you could make a freedom of information request to find out?

bottom line... be civil & everyone is happy. They are quite within their rights to:- stop you & ask what you are doing; ask your name or for some form of ID.

Never, under any circumstances, a good idea to give the rozza's any reason to "enquire further". Lets face it if you were stopped on the motorway you would not give them any crap would you? ( or are there really people out there that stupid....)

That said we are seeing the further erosion of civil liberties, but it is inevitable given the current political climate... unless we get really radical ourselves... not a place anyone really wants to go.

Quite what the flight into Detroit has anything to do with this thread is beyond me. A Nigerian flight with a changeover in Amsterdam, then continuing over to Detroit? What jurisdiction do our laws have over any aspect of that incident, and indeed how were we affected?

If photographic material of public places was really that much of an issue, then why has there been no control of Google Earths "Streetview". Gives any budding terrorist an instant look at multiple potential targets.

Some years ago, I recall calling 911 whilst living in Iowa, USA; there was an intruder in my garden; the officer attended in minutes, knocked at my door to make sure I was ok and to reassure as to his armed-presence....however, the intruder had left and upon hearing my description, the officer said he thought he knew whom it might-be and raced off to see if he could intercept the chap on his way home, which he did and returned later to reassure me that the intruder had been arrested and would not be back.

Recently, I suffered a series of intrusion-burglaries (here at my remote Snowdonian farm)....calling the police brought the reply that "we`re very busy and will send someone when available": which actually was often, later the next day.....a brief chat with the visiting bobby and a crime-number.....no fingerprints or (seemingly) any inclination to solve the crime.
...although, I did notice that the Welsh officer was keen to look if the tax-disc was current on my car.

I`d much rather have the Police serving and protecting me, than enforcing laws upon me....as an honest and respectful person, the former sits far-more comfortably than the latter.
I worry that Governments have used people`s genuine and warrantable fear of terrorism to enact laws that debase and diminish our relationship of trust and respect for 'our' Police.

There is no current law which states that you must carry ID cards on you at all times, however the introduction of ID cards appeared to attempt to change that.

He could have been arrested under any number of different laws, but using the terrorism act in this instance is purely rediculous.
