Jewellers use oxy-acetylene too.
I'd imagine that a garage would just absorb the extra cost of the regulations and pass the cost onto the customers when working out the rate they charge. I don't think it will be banned, especially as there are a few companies starting to offer rent free acetylene.

They must know what's going on and they wouldn't be putting money into a venture doomed to fail because the product was about to be outlawed. They'd also be pretty much obliged to state anything along the lines of, "This product is only available to licensed users for use on approved premises...." if they needed too, or have a lot of time wasting enquiries and ****** off potential customers. I don't see any hint of that on the website. It looks like anyone with a credit card can turn up and buy it and they don't ask whether you are licensed to carry acetylene by road.

i really cant imagine BOC investing in a new acetylene plant if its on its way out.
did you also know that acetylene is slightly lighter then air so if you ever have a leak dont switch your lights on thinking you cant smell it, its on the ceiling

The Government has awarded industrial gases company BOC £1.5 million from its Regional Growth Fund to support the construction of a new Dissolved Acetylene production facility in North East Lincolnshire.
BOC, a member of the The Linde Group, is proposing to site the facility next to its existing Special Gases plant at Immingham. Subject to final planning permission, work on the project, worth around £20 million in total, will begin with a view to the plant becoming operational in 2012. The new facility is expected to generate around 40 jobs (direct and indirect).
Dissolved acetylene is used in a wide range of industrial processes by over 160,000 customers of BOC across the UK. It is used for welding and cutting operations as well as in the hardening of metals. As such it is a key technology in many engineering and infrastructure programmes.
Mike Huggon, Managing Director of BOC, said: “I am delighted that the Government has recognised the strategic importance of this project to the UK economy. The new plant that we are proposing to construct at Immingham is designed to provide the UK with a state of the art production and filling facility suited to the demands of 21st century engineering.”
Councillor Chris Shaw, Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council said: “I am delighted that BOC has secured this investment which will lead to quality jobs in the area. The project is a prime example of how the private sector, council and MPs can successfully work together under one voice for the benefit of the area.”
Tony Ogden, Manager of BOC Operations at Immingham and Chairman of Humber Chemical Focus, commented: “This investment will be a real stimulus for the economy both at local and national level. It will create new jobs in the Humber region as well as servicing the needs of the wider UK industrial community.”
The planned new DA facility is part of a coordinated programme to strengthen the supply chain for this product. BOC is investing nearly £10 million in the latest ‘ecological porous mass’ cylinders which contain greater volumes of gas within the same cylinder sizes.
The company is also reinforcing and formalising commercial agreements with third party suppliers in Europe to ensure stable, secure yet flexible supplies. The new cylinder technology is compatible with systems used by continental suppliers and this will simplify technical compatibility and quality assurance.
Taken together, these investments will make the supply chain more flexible and responsive to variations in demand within the marketplace in the UK and Ireland.

AFAIK you need a Home Office licence for acetylene generators. Assuming that's the case i'd have thought that if you were to get caught they'd throw the book at you followed by the bookcase and then the library

Hi, first and most likely only post, I just stumbled across this whilst looking for something else BOC related....
I'm an LGV Driver working out of BOC Brinsworth (Rotherham).
The information given was correct - currently, all BOC DA (Dissolved Acetylene) is being brought in from overseas via Immingham docks. We're usually running between 4 and 6 trailers over any 24hr period between the docks and Brinsworth. Each trailer has anything from 18 heavy banks of DA to around 300 small cylinders; many loads are mixed.
As far as I know, we feed pretty much the whole UK DA BOC supply, hence the shortage. From Brinsworth we run cylinders to many other BOC depots nationwide.
BOC are currently building a DA production plant at Immingham - I'm not entirely sure what stage this build is at but I've seen jobs advertised on their website so it can't be that far off, rumours have it at sometime in 2013.
Once the plant is complete, the supply chain will become far more efficient and BOC should get back up to speed with meeting demand.

You can get little ones over here in France in the small ad's as a lot of garages had their own generators setup in days gone by to save cylinder rental costs.
I have often wondered about buying one, but imagine if it went wrong the result might be a bit interesting to deal with, although they do operate at very low pressure rather than the huge pressure inside a cylinder.
I think they went out of vogue as disposing of the byproducts is a pain, it results in some very nasty toxic sludge apparently.
