Ebay bargain delivered today: good second hand set of tappets and bushes to replace knackered ones.

Tool in post above to remove the old ones.

Another delivery today: a new old stock Alpha main bearing, that is not rust just dried on grease/corrosion inhibitor. Think a bargain again, new ones are £240, got it for under £100 on ebay. The original one is a little gritty so will have a look at it.

Made 2 spacers to fit as thread nears end stroke on tappet removal tool:

And delivery today of 2 reconditioned Lucas SR1 magneto's with 5 year guarantees just back from Rutland Dynamo's and Magneto's that I sent off back in April. I hope the work is to @zeppelin builder standards. one for this engine, the other off my other Matchless.

Hoping to get back to this soon, picked up a spare decoke set, New very Old Stock: was originally 5 shillings then written over at 65p. Inflation!

I can remember selling old stock of those in the 70s. Good gaskets in my experience.

Had to send the wofe out for a packet of setting tools for fitting my reconditioned mag.

Doubt many workshop manuals today describe the use of a cigarette paper for setting timing.

Depends on how much advance you need.

Green are near to .001" and what I use, I believe red are thicker and then blue to silver are the thinnest....

.075" that is a pretty fat rizzla;-)

Blue was the thin one, I smoked red and used red for timing.
I think red and green are the same thickness.

There was a discussion about this on the Model Engineering forum. Old school method of when milling to stick piece of Rizla paper on workpiece, lower cutter until it removed paper and then set zero. Being a newby to milling and a non smoker it had never occurred to me.

Oops Fat fingers, Just shows what a zero makes, ( I once got called out to deal with a badly vibrating small steam turbine that another firm had overhauled, Turbine to compressor vertical coupling mis-alignment deign was 0.35mm, To allow for thermal expansion. which they had read as imperial 0.035". To compound the level of vibration the coupling was a 300mm long solid steel with 50mm thick flanges, Not a pleasant job, I was winter, Roof was 25 feet high and no walls, For the overhaul the sides were sheeted in with clear tarpaulins, But removed prior to the first start up, Not pleasant, freezing cold and snow blowing in with a vengance got a very nice letter later from the Ethylene Oxide plant manager, I gave it a good shake but no cash or cheques fell out,

You can use ordinary printer paper, its 4 thou, 0.10 of a mil.

Nope, i used the paper method for a while, but got a nice starrett edge finder and use that with the DRO.

thats a braw bearing ,did you get an outer ring with it ?sometimes it needs a light hone after its pressed in the con rod
magnetos look good and very little to go wrong in them sr types , can be easily
used as a distrbutor for coil,ignition as i asume youl have auto advance
these matchys can be made to fly too
the Rickman bros were very succesful at mx in years past
my pal made a pressed up long stroke
crank with carillo rod that made it 600
cc it was the g 80 cs version with the central plug firing through a wee slot
i tried it out on an open pipe in the stubble field and it was a real flier
did you see Steve Tonkin giving the manxes at goodwood a real run for ther money on his tuned matchy

I was thinking of welding the worn faces and filing back to shape.

I am using CS cams in the 500 engine and still not decided on using the perhaps overported head that came with the engine:

I do not want to go to far with tuning, just want a reliable engine that accelerates better than my 350 and will sit at 65 without feeling thrashed.

aye that would be ok with a wee bit tig patience it should be easy , no left much for sealing on that flange must be about 34 mm that port is there a bigger valve too, that will sook spuggies in there on full chat
