Plasma cutter made quick work of cutting out the repair patch shape. (Air fed mask due to galv etc)
Basic shape being bashed in for alot more refininment on the car next
That's as much of my GF's patience I dare to use up tonight. Will try and get a few mins every evening.
I will take it so far then really it has to be tacked into place and do the final fitment and cutting on the car so it's exactly spot on.

I got the panel shape set as close as I can and started welding it in.
From here I can take a small section at a time, run a slitting disc through new and old steel at sound areas and use sheetmetal butt clamps to align and tack following the edge around until closed.

If this particular car didn't go to someone who could restore it themselves it would for sure be parted out and scrapped. It was probably going towards scrap yard when I bought it as someone had already cut the cat off it and the car was very cheap. I think I paid £450 from memory.
When I have it restored it will be worth £6k ish in 2025 and going up each year. This particular car isn't that desirable other models like my E320 Sportline coupe will be worth double that for the same investment in buying it and my time.
So both. I would make a little money if I sold them after doing all the work but I don't restore them to sell them on. I keep them and as each year goes by the fleet is worth more £ so it's a win win in my books. Worse hobbies to be at, at least this one does appreciate in value with time.
Only for enthusiasts like you most of these would end up in scrap to keep a small handful of remaining cars on the road.
It's a bonus that they will make a profit, a lot of restorations don't.

PITA of a job but today I finished up the metal working / welding repair of the other headlamp area.
Next up is some finer hammer and dolly work then a fine skim of short strand fibreglass filler (water resistant) to the welds and get it ready for first coats of 2k primer in these areas.
