Heres the job i had to do, repair this ali tailgate that snagged when dropping a load and cracked the box section,
Up a ladder, foot pedal between my knees,
What was amazing is how welding machines have moved on in regards to lower power input required,
I was using somewhere between 130-160 amps on my dynasty 200 on a 13amp domestic supply coming from a portacabin that probably didnt have the best supply going in,
Thats not all,
I had a 50 metre extension cable running from the portacabin to my welder and didn't pop the 13amp fuse,
Yeah it was pretty warm but held up


There is something about a good thick cable extension going to a sort of commando 13amp to 16 amp plug that makes it quite hard to pop the 13

I could'nt see what was wrong at first, then I could see what you were talkin about I spotted the rubber hose joining the black iron pipe work, I agree disgusting fancy using only one clip at each end!! AND the clips are not on one side very untidy.

A neighbour of mine had a dilapidated Landy which had plates on the chassis that looked like that. Supposedly done by a pro.

On his MoT advisory sheet the tester had put a comment that 'Weld appears to have been applied with a catapult'

Was the weld dropped on it from a height or flicked at it from a distance?

As evobilly said, even I would be embarrassed if I produced that quality of work in my own garage. I definitely wouldn't charge someone for it.

Back to the "check out my first weld" topic, what did he do wrong? I'm thinking the primary issue was lack of heat/amps?

Switching his welder on was the primary issue I think.

To be fair, Norm, it certainly smells of someone who has been welding for about 30 minutes before he took on this commission. I would really hope that even a fly-by-night geezer wouldn't leave that mess behind if he had any welding experience at all.

A guy that i knew used to do a lot of hotrod type stuff as i do and would often get in projects to put right with similar poor work,
the way he saw it was that if it was a diy guy doing his best and having a go all well n good,
Where the problem is when people claim to do a certain standard of work,
produce similar substandard work but charge proper money?

I've been doing some welding on black cabs recently and one had patches over patches all inside rear arches it was just a state.

black cabs do rust well done plenty of sills inners wings etc

You've mentioned a few times how you've held the peddle in weird ways when in weird positions, are there any other types of amp control you've tried that might be better for this kind of thing?

Yeah i've a variable amperage thumb control torch that would've worked on that job,
trouble is its connected to a little WP9 torch which wont handle the amount of current needed on that job,
could've fitted it to a WP26 torch i have but not worth it for one job.

black cabs do rust well done plenty of sills inners wings etc

They certainly do rust. I rang up manufacture for price on replacement inner arch and they now only sell fibreglassed ones.

Got called out several weeks ago to to a mobile ali tig repair on a tipper trailer,
while i was there the guy that recommended me showed me what was done by a previous mobile welder,

Simple repair, its common for these vibrators to crack the welds on these mobile concrete mixing trucks,
Grind back the cracked areas and run a few stick weld passes around, job done,

Apparently this guy (professional) came out with the tarty sign written mobile welder van,

The question is would you be brave enough to put your hand out for payment for this standard of work?

True but you'd think the only way to make money doing something is by being good at it. He probably works for tuppence and, as was said in the "tool quality" thread, people are much more concerned with price than quality unfortunately.

the thing is he may only be doing one off's I doubt he will get repeat work from that, unless the people don't care about as long as it does the job and charges them 20 quid

I love that because it makes me feel like some sort of black belt welder. I seriously can't quite believe the picture. He needs to spend some time on here looking at the tutorials.
