It was that crap job being one of the reasons my friend got his foot in the door for the mild steel welding and fabrication so no repeat work for him there.

The common man would look at something like that, and whilst he might think it looks a bit messy, wouldn't think it would snap off under load. I've heard it said a couple of times when we have pointed something out like that 'well it's been welded, it will never come off - he was here ages doing it'

It certainly is worrying that welding like that can be found structural steelwork-as you say-its frightening (actually its scary that welds like that can be be found on anything-including a piece of scrap-I'd have to grind that off before I lobbed it into the skip).
I did a couple of years of my apprenticeship before I left, and I guess, like most people on here,because you have an interest in welding, pro or hobby, when you are in a steelfab building or on a ferry-whatever, where there is welding to be seen, you cast your eye over it.
Imagine seeing welding like that on the steelwork of the building you are in on a windy day.
I can see why the pukka outfits in the trade will be for the CE marking process to cut the cowboys out.
As ever though, the burden (and costs) of regulation fall on the guys that did not need it-the cowboys ride off to start up in something else.

think that sums it up, let's be honest, most of us on here aren't qualified welders, so the "weld by catapault" has happened to all of us at some point, but you'd get the grinder and start again, because I doubt many here would allow that out the door even by our DIY standards. For me the problem is that this guy is a professing to be "professional" which means that the majority of people, who don't know any better, will trust him to do works to a professional standard, meaning fit for purpose and safe.
Never mind accepting money for it, which is bad enough, it's the fact that he's walked away and left it considering that it could fail and injure someone. Unfortunately clowns like this are all to common now, in all trades.

If you look at the picture the only weld that looks like it approaches any level of competence is the top horizontal weld. I guess the welder has never done any positional welding and tackled the vertical welds by vertical down, the slag has run down the weld, making him chase ahead of it and giving him the impression that it was a decent weld UNTIL he got his chipping hammer out. He would have realised then that most of the bead was in fact slag.
What he should of done was perfected his vertical up on the bench before tackling a paid for job.

As you say, A bead of silicone then the paint and it would have been real good.

I've seen bolt heads siliconed onto structural steel to make it look like it's bolted where the holes don't match up.

I've seen the same....on a bridge

Same job where there was a drill bit jammed in a wall and stuck out 200mm or so...with a nut welded on it.

I think the reason that many of us on here, me included are all saying how bad that is and how we wouldn't want to do jobs of that poor quality and then charge for it is because the vast majority of us on here are enthusiasts and have a passion for what we make and weld, also always striving to do that next job better than the last,

true words, the fundamental problem of today, even worse when you get slagged off for taking the time to do it right, it might be old skool, but I still take pride in what I do, or try to do... The daft thing is that, a lot of or most of the time, it's not that much more do do it right anyway, especialy when you consider that to "undo" it an do it again will take longer when the client doesn't accept it.

The way I was brought up was to take pride in any job that you do. When I drove a forklift truck I was I damn good one, when I worked in the brewery I was a bloody good brewer and currently I'm a pretty fine customer advisor in a call centre. I've never understood the half a job mentality. If you're going to do it, do it right.

Even some of my most embarrassing welds looked better than that.

We had a case of "that'll do" on Tuesday when a 2" pivot broke on one of the line drive motors, thanks to piece of 4" box section and some stick welding it no longer pivots but as long as we keep building cars 'til the weekend (when we can replace it) management (and their big bonuses) are happy.
