I got given a couple of old Gennys to fix up. One is a 5hp Honda engine. both have been sitting in a builders yard for 3 or 4 years. The Honda needless to say started second pull. They both need a good clean of course, as well as the obligatory oil and filters changed, that goes without saying.
They are a Makita 1300K ( with a EY15D Robin engine) and the second one is a Honda GX 140 with a Markon generator (too tired to go outside and find out more detail at the mo)
The Makita Robyn has had bad fuel in it i think. My pal said that when he took the cap off it "smelled like paint stripper" so i assume this was the unleaded gone off. he tried new fuel to no avail. When i got it home i realised that the fuel tap was gunked up anyway, with no fuel getting to the carb. Not that this was going to be much use, as the plug was not even giving off a spark when you pulled the starter. I tried it to the body of the genny and not a single spark could be seen. Hope i can get it to work, it seems a nice little beast with 240/110 as well as 12V, with a handy volt meter on the front. I also tried to clean the old foam air filter but when i put it in to some methalated spirits it litterally disolved the foam into a sludgey goo. So i put in a bit of zinc mesh for now. With the ammount of time its been sitting in the yard, I am assuming the carb will be varnished up at the very least. However it was the lack of spark that worried me more. Have to have a closer look at that one.
The Honda was a diferent matter. As i mentioned it did go second pull. I had a look inside and the oil was the blackest i have ever seen. So i suppose a full clean up is needed to engine and carb, at the very least. The genny motor was something called a Markon. Anyone know anything about these ? The fuses were apparently by-passed, or something ? I will take a pic to show the forum tomorrow, not too sure on the old sparkey side of things personally
More anon. Here are the pics...
