Re sweeping: I find that despite only getting a small amount out each time, the improvement is quite noticable, epecially with smoke comng out of the door on opening. (this is with a 150cm all SS flue, in an old stack with vermiculite around it.
Our main fire has a flap that short circuits the flue path when you open the door, as otherwise the slightly convoluted path would give one a face full. The soot tends to sit on the shelf and slow things down, but clearing it is quite quick as long as the fire is cool.
