Couldn’t be having any of that. He also gave me a load of discs to go with it but not sure if they’ll be any good. No dates on them like with 9 inch grinder discs.

My chop saw discs are at least 12 years old and still get used.

Bin them and buy some new reputable brand ones, you have no idea how they have been stored , do not want that in your face.

As the correct answer, I cannot disagree with it.
However, if you are going to use expired disks, this style of machine is maybe the least-bad one to use them on. The guard is fully enclosed. The disk is spinning away from you. If you operate it right-handed, your face is a long way from the spinny bit.

Your inability
The whole pile of discs look to be in decent condition and knowing the guy as well as I do they will have been stored correctly. He was 40 years a machinist and for anyone who recalls my new garage build this chap is the one who helped me in return for using the spare steel to make a garage for him. He is completely retentive when it comes to anything engineering related. Even those long stretchers in the frame (4 metres-ish) had to be millimetre perfect, not 5mm, not 3mm, but spot on.
So with my new safety specs and a full face shield over the top I'm going to try it and see. It runs slower than a grinder anyway, although 3800rpm is not insignificant. That's the thing, I've been through the pile of discs this morning and even the ones which look brand new with perfect labels have no dates on them. Perhaps being a lower speed they aren't subject to the same forces as a 9 inch grinder...

For the type of disks on the machine (reinforced, organic-bonded) the surface speed, whatever the size, is generally 80 metres per second. That means for a small, Dremel-like machine, it has to spin at a lot higher rpms than a 12" or 14" cut off saw that you have.
Giant wind turbines spin very slowly, but the tips of the blades are going at considerably more than 100mph.

try snapping them by hand sideways. i bet you cant or bloody strong if u can. i sharpen chisels on the side of stihlsaw blades at full whack pressing hard can get them to flex quite a way and still no probs
OK, I've done the safety checks with the discs and all seem fairly good. Nothing flimsy so I gave it a try. Works well enough but noisy and violent as the clappers of hell I shan't be using this, that is for certain. Now on the lookout for a horizontal bandsaw.
