I have a 9" makita a 7" Matabo and a few 41/2" makita.
7" fill the gap nice but are a hard thing to track down consumables for.
9" will boss big cutting jobs
41/2" are just fine for bits but are not good at all for serious cutting jobs

You are shopping in the wrong places, we keep lots of 7" cutting and grinding discs. Its becoming more popular than 9" round here as the grinders have got cheaper more and more people are choosing them as a more user friendly alternative, plus we have done a real selling job on 7" in our patch. Something with a safety clutch is a must on a big grinder though.

Lol I got a loan of a black and decker one today so got most of what I wanted one for done.Another mate came over with one made by challenger burnt it out in 5 minutes cutting up a bit railway track .

Screwfix have the hitachi set of 9 inch and 4 1/2 inch for 89quid which i think is a good deal and always usefull having additional 4 1/2 grinders

A good thing is when youve worn the discs down enough, you can use them on your 4 1/2" grinder, you get a fresh disc in the big one and the equivalent of a fresh disc for your little one

make sure the 9 inch worn disc is ok for the higher speed of the 4 1/2 inch grinder.

Noticed screwfix have the titan 9inch on sale makes it £55 quid with a 5 year guarantee. Had a wee Google search I believe there made in tiawan.decisions decisions.Sammy.

Sammy, if I was you I'd be buying from a well known quality brand, and then second to that how it feels in your hand. It's a big lump to be swinging about, try make it as comfy as you can for yourself.

I use 9 inch grinders a lot and in Aluminium which kills them if they are not up to the job as it expands and grips the discs when cutting.
Cheap ones have lasted me as little as a few hours, better ones such as Dewalt, Bosch etc have lasted me maybe a year or two but I had a Hitachi for 6 years before I killed it. Got another but it only lasted 2 or 3 years but it was a cheaper model so I bought the dearer one next time and it is still going strong after a 3 or 4 years years. The model I buy has the aluminium body, see pic for model number, best grinder I have used and only one I will buy now.

OK decided I'm going to buy the Hitachi tomorrow 'Get both 9inch and 4 inch for about £100 .That means I'll have 4 x4 inch grinders ' one with a cut of wheel'one with a flapdisk and one with a grinding disks and I'll stick one away as a spare.Plus the big 9inch for when I'm feeling brave.thanks for all replies and help Sammy.

Well took my self off to screwfix only to be told they no longer do the Hitachi two pack .so I ended up buying a makita.

Never had a Makita grinder, well not a 9inch one, do have a 110v 4 1/2" one and it is decent enough. I do have a couple of Makita cordless drills and they are excellent so I would imagine their 9" grinders should be good as well.

Don't know about slipping clutch stopping all kickback events. Proper care and training can prevent it being an issue though

No it becomes more dangerous and a 7 " is a smaller machine you can still use one handed, never met a guy who could use a 9" with one hand or use one continously for much time

Always done this, but it can be hard to get them small enough unless you're cutting really thin stuff. So I generally have a pile of nearly 4 1/2 disks when they're at the difficult stage and they get put back on the 9" when there's a lot of work to do with thin materials to finish them off. I think a 7" would be sensible.

Ah yes, being safe.
My take on it is that as a disc gets smaller the safe speed rating increases, so I'm quite happy doing this.

Very useful, but never use without eye protection!
It's bad enough spending the evening picking them out of clothing, it's the one tool I never, ever use without protection.

But the grinder with a small disk is still a heavy powerful lump, however the main point with having a grinder for the size wheel is in how much of the disc you can actually use before the grinder hits the workpiece. How small can you use the disc down to with a 9" vs a 7", vs a 4 1/2" and so on.

Also how long can you safely hang onto a 9" before your arms fatigue and you put yourself at risk of an injury?
A 9" is a wonderful beast for rapid stock removal but it's a hell of a thing to lug one around for extended periods. People come in all shapes and sizes, it's nice to find a tool that's the right "fit" for the operator.

Yeah, website will be fully operational soon. Barely 5% is listed yet and we have a slow broadband connection so people are finding it slow to connect to our website but we have fibre to the building now and that will be lived up in a matter of days.

Funny think people talk about the weight. I'm skinny and light and by no means strong yet although they can kick and grab if you're not careful I don't struggle with the weight of a 9", and some days it can see a lot of use.
Ok, I'd not want to have to operate one single handed while leaning a little too far off a ladder for long but I would have to be using one for a heck of a lot of the day to be bothering about the weight.
