I have used quite a few LEDs now - I find fluorescents get a bad name because the diffusers are filthy and have gone yellow with age! I cleaned a few of ours and the difference was incredible

I don’t want to change the fittings because of future plans. There seems very mixes views on the LED tubes, in 6ft there difficult to get hold of and more than twice the price of the fluorescent.
So at the present Screwfix is looking favourite for some new fluorescent tubes.

I'm really impressed with the Ansell battens. The fitting is quite nice that you can hang it to wire to rather than trying to hold everything. There in the garage so not used as much as the rest of the where kids and Mrs insist on leaving them on constantly although they do get used most days.
I agree on the light colour. I don't mind the warm white LEDs in the house. The Ansell's are more on the almost blue white end. But ok for a garage.
I regret fitting fixed JCC led downlights in our kitchen. I think I've replaced all 20 of them, some multiple times. They have honoured the 10yr warranty without any fuss though. Compared to halogens they use 10% of the energy. I'll replace with GU10 type fittings when they're out of warranty

We have two old incandescent bulbs which don't get a lot of use, one in the cupboard under the stairs and the other on the upstairs landing and they were both there when we moved here 38 years ago. The bike shop bought some LED bulbs and left them on permanently and they died within 6 months. I read up and they are not for use more than 4 hours at a time.

The first thing I noticed with the LED tubes was they make no heat, the old units always got warm. Surely this alone means they are using less electricity

Not really. If you have a tube rated at 38W that is how much power it will use.
In fact it just shows how much more efficient the Flouro tubes are in that for the the same wattage as an LED they produce more light and heat!

Not so sure, my twin LED 5`24w tubes replaced twin 5`fluorescent of 58w tubes each, also no ballast to energise and I reckon they are brighter. That has to be a saving doesn't it, more than half the lumens made by the old style tubes don't go anywhere do they.

And dont forget fluorescent lamps loose around 50% luminous output, 40hrs per week and it happens in less than 6mths
I've had the reverse of that with basic LED tubes I have got from TLC electrical vs osram fluorescent tubes , I have two identical rooms for workshop one led and one fluorescent.

Not sure how you how you work that out, my 6' flourescents had two 70W tubes in them, the new 6' LED units are 78w. Even when they were brand new the flourescents were nowhere near as bright as these LED units are.
A 70w flourescent tube is about 5-6000lm, these 78w LED are 8200lm and even with twin tubes the flourescents weren't as good.
It's quite regular that I go to the workshop to grab something and I need to be in there literally seconds, on a cold night the tubes would be flickering away while they started up. The LEDs are instant.
If we are talking about the replacement LED tubes for flourescents then I agree they are pants
I've installed a 5' (doesn't help you) led replacement with a led starter in a kitchen couple of years back and its still working well, brighter than the fluorescent and instant on.
Screwfix or Toolstation sell led units for 21 quid that come with a tail fitted so you need a junction box, couple of friends have them in garages and are pleased, not sure about longevity yet.
Led security lights wise, I've tried many types and they all seem to fail, well the PIR part does, so I think the trick is to use separate stand alone PIR.

I have been looking at 5ft units. The LED ones are the same wattage and less lumens.

You may well be jesting by you never know. I got to a site several times a week where they have 6 data halls. We went through a spell where nearly all of the power supplies we ever swapped were in one of the halls. This was to the point where they had monitors on the supply to see if there were any spikes. Nothing was ever found and it all seemed to settle down. There was clearly something going on there but we never found out what.

Bizarre you should say that...
We had a powercut the 11th November, most of the day. It came back, assumed the grid.
Two weeks later, last Wednesday, same, assumed the same.
Went to borrow more batteries for the inverter, and realised it was just us.
Following morning called out EDF, the ancient porcelain fuse holders, were ok, but the neutral link, not a fuse, a link had welded itself in place and died, we still had three phase but no neutral, so the smart counter wasn't functioning.
All fixed in an hour or so, EDF man put it down to old equipment, otherwise one of the fuses on the phases would've popped.
I've got an ampimetric tester, borrowed from work, and when I've got some time, I'll whack everything on at the same time, run a full hot bath, so the hot water tanks on too, and compare the pull on the phases, but for the neutral to cook?
