45 years ago yesterday I started mine! Oddly enough I think this year was the first time I’d ever missed the anniversary.

As a sign of how times have changed.
My job is to look after a large number of Apprentices for the RAF. When they get to the end of their Apprenticeship, one of the things I need to know is when they started, so I can work out if they finished in line with their planned dates.
Now, because I'm sensible I tend to look the required information up beforehand, but at the same time I always ask them as part of their final sign off interview when they started their Apprenticeship, and I can 100% garuntee that most of them have no idea.
Normally they just stare blankly at me, or say "Err, January, no July, no May, err 2020, no 2023, err, I don't know it was ages ago"
Apparently the youth of today are much better educated and much more switched on though.

When I finished my secondary school education in the early '90s I don't think apprenticeships were even available ???

1976 I started mine. Never actually knew there was a start date, and I've never, ever, celebrated any sort of anniversary of it. I had an interview, to get the job, then had to go to college for a year, no idea what date that started.

That sort of brought me up short. My eldest lad was coming up to twelve then and I had long finished my apprenticeship bloody hell!

It was 40 years for me in August. I choose to forget. I find now that being a doer / maker / fixer seems a pretty rare thing. Either people haven't got the skills or are too lazy to do whatever and it befalls to me. I need to start saying no too. Catch 22 when you know you "can" or can't sit idly by and watch someone else cock it up or ruin good materials.
It's why I drink @ajlelectronics! To forget the perceived injustice.
I think though I've made a rod for my own back, only because I have the hand skills and there was some material lying about...
