yep they would certainly trash the electronics on the sky box and boiler tv etc i once trashed a customers sky box with a thousand volt test it was insured and guy came out and changed it he said to the the punter hasnt been any lightening has they no why . a power surge caused it .i was hiding in the garage and said nowt never done that again

We used to use 36" Steelsons with a chain hoist to pull it, undoing 80mm af octagonal piston rod nuts on compressors. The open ended spanner we were supposed to use simply opened up and ruined the nut.

I've seen them with the 6th side removable so set the spanner in place and insert the 6th side which stops the spanner being able to open

Being as your location is BC, I'd be inclined to shoot doubleboost a pm and see if he'll cut you a spanner out on his plasma table out of some 15mm plate....

Stilsons will do the job absolutely fine. even an old worn ones will undo that. JCB rams are some of the easiest to reseal.

If you do insist on using Stilsons, cut and split a piece of plastic drainpipe to slip onto the rod to protect the chrome in case of slippage.

Having a machine like this will never be cheap. You will always end up throwing money at it !

Craig-SM has very kindly collected and posted the 36" record stilsons. Nice to be re-using old tools.

Will update when I've done the job.
I'm not expecting the gland nut to be tight but needed something to get a grip on it. Can't easily use home made sockets or ring spanners as the rod gets in the way but some fantastic ideas for the future thanks folks.
