36" stilsons

After the recent acquisition of a nice old 3cx it's sprung a leak. It's leaking enough to be worth fixing, assuming the pins play ball. Typically it's the boom ram seals, one of the more awkward to get to. Looking at the workshop manual this seems to be a 90mm gland nut.

I'm planning on getting some decent sized stilsons, think the 36" should cover everything I'd need to do. I can't seem to find any decent second hand ones available in that size...

I was considering something mid range like these:

However would I be better off trying to find some old record stilsons and recutting the teeth in them? Seems to be quite rare for anything over 24". Also seem to be strong money.

Would prefer to avoid the cheapest as don't suspect they'd live up to being swung off with a scaffold pole.

I don't want to be splashing out more than needed on a big spanner that's probably not going to get a huge amount of work, equally would like it to last well enough. Thoughts?

I have some record 24" with like new jaws if you think you can make do with 24". Not expensive

I think the 24" only have a jaw opening of about 60/70mm I need around 90. If you get a chance to measure that'd be grand though please.

Dont they use C or pin spanners ? Stilsons are a surefire way of ruining the gland

No idea, I will check tomorrow when I'm back in the workshop though.

24" usually only go to 75mm

Here's the offending ram, can see it's well tucked up. Would like the correct spanner to do it before I pull it apart as there's still some digging to do this summer.

Here's the next closest size with around 95mm nut

In an ideal world would get a slogging spanner cut for the size of the ram but they're all different sizes and can't be throwing too much money at it. Would like to have a tool to do them all.

Shouldn't be too much time to make a CAD (.dxf in this case) and have all the sizes burnt out from 1/2" thick plate.

I have no idea how much the cut out spanners would be? I know steel is expensive at the moment. Got a local fabricator that can cut up to 20mm plate just need drawings for prices I suppose.

This is where cost's add up.
Walk in with a .dxf file on a stick (or e-mail the file) and you'll save office time.
Plus, it's a simple hex shape (I would draw corner reliefs).
Do you have a service like Cut-send ? Where you e-mail the file, get an online quote, and the parts show up in a few days ?

I thought there are a few members on here with CNC plasma tables ?

It's been a good while since I did anything CAD. I was thinking take a 2d drawing to get an idea of price, not have them draw it.
I haven't heard of cut send will look it up. Sound useful.

Easy enough to make a six sided socket out of bits of flat to fit that nut and weld on/brace a gurt long handle. I make any odd ball hub nut sockets this way.

We used to use 36" Steelsons with a chain hoist to pull it, undoing 80mm af octagonal piston rod nuts on compressors. The open ended spanner we were supposed to use simply opened up and ruined the nut.

I like my other bahco stuff I wasn't sure about how their stilsons are?

I have a set of bahco 18"s as well as a couple of sets of records... The records have a slimmer head and bite slightly easier. The bahcos aren't bad though, and I've had a cheater bar on them too...

I remember seeing one of the production workers at the foundry coming out of the boiler house with a set of 36" Stilsons over his shoulder, he probably didn't have a use for them, but because it was a tool that wasn't nailed down or locked up he was having it away

i got a 2 and a half thousand volt megger given that wasnt nailed down totally useless to me i dont run a power station
