3 phase cable. Why are distributors so unhelpful?

yes but the braiding must be connected as well as an earth core

well got the answer back from the expert on the portable leads http://www.voltimum.co.uk/content/earthing-cable apparently double insulated so no requirement

Yes thanks for asking, and knowing where to ask. I asked the workshop and they gave me almost the same answer BUT apparently we had a big hoo-harr once on a major project had got one of their resident electrician to repair a lead for us. That guy spotted the taped-up braid and made a big thing of it saying that all the 3phase leads must have the braid bonded to earth. It went to the safety team but we still refused to do it. In the end we had a compromise where they got their own sparky to do all our leads on that job. Now that we have a definitive answer with appropriate legislation to quote, it should go a lot easier if it ever happens again. Also personally since I'm not any kind of electrician it makes it more settled in my own mind because TBH I was starting to wonder if we were breaking some regulation. Glad to see we are not.

its an odd one as armoured on fixed instalations must be bonded with proper glands and an earth tag . we live and learn

lol still a no goer. it flattens the cable and isn't a good mechanical joint I once got me a ..se kicked by an nic inspector for using an earth clamp on an armoured cable

It is, the screw slots aren't in line.

ok here is a really stupid question.

how the hell do you get the armor on an armored cabel to sit in the gland properly. everytime i do it the results are what id call managable at best i regualy see a lot worse but itd be nice if it looked right

keep the cable strait when u cut the braid and fit gland and tighten . otherwise it will cut uneven I f its bent

You should go with my plan " i was always planning on fitting self amalgamating tape all along" of course i didn't forget!

If it's not important I have been known to split the shroud and fit it with black tape at the back
