That's more a fault of continuing to use a damaged cable or effecting an unsatisfactory repair. If you damage it, replace it. That's why we use hundreds of metres a year.

and do u get a random yearly inspection by the nic eic on your jobs . I probably think not well I do and I know the outcome . just carry on if your happy with your working practices. good luck

I can see where in a workshop environment having the braiding earthed would be more important. After all, leads will tend to be more static, so damage might go unnoticed. Added to that anything that does puncture them is most likely to be steel and most likely to be handled which also increases the risk of electrocution.
In my trade the leads are inspected at every use and afterwards wrapped up and returned to stores where they are inspected again. Damage is usually severe and accompanied by a tripped breaker or at the very least a machine stopping. It's very unusual to get a bang, sometimes a little pop and a bit of a flash but you get that from a severed 110v lead with only 55v potential.

SY cable as extensions and for site power must be one of the most widely accepted deviation from any reg going. Strange in the events and stage industry its hardly ever used its mainly rubber cable.

That's just examples. I am asking about regulations because you've got me thinking about it. I've been hitting google for an hour and there's a lot of differing opinions and practices on the electrical type forums but no mention so far of actual regulations.

My understanding is that if Sy is used it must be connected but it does not meet regs as the CPC is inadequate.

Well that link suggests that it should not be used for electrical protection but then again it goes on to mention installation regs when I am actually asking about extension leads. I can't find any guidance on portable leads or even if they are considered as 'installations'.

This is probably a situation where if there was a serious accident and someone was injured/killed and there was no previous case that set a legal precedent then you'd be looking at expert witnesses to help the judge decide.
Obviously it can't be used as a CPC, that's just a daft idea, but it probably would be sensible to earth it.

True, but use adhesive lined heatshrink or other insulating sleeving and the risk is quite seriously reduced. Obviously leaving it as bare braid in the plug is a silly idea and is bad practice.
Most of my three phase machines in the work shop use SY, and I make a pigtail by fishing the other conductors though a gap in the braid, then heatshrink yellow/green over it and connect to earth. I also heatshrink a black sleeve between the cut back outer sheath, and the braid.

That's exactly the way I do it - easiest and quickest way if you don't have the proper glands (I don't think I've ever used the proper glands except on some big 75 kW motors we used to do, certainly for smaller cables we never used them)

right I have posted on voltimum questions and answers ask an expert about any regulation and on the take of bonding braiding or not bonding it .when I hear back I will report the results. I personaly bond the braiding the same as fixed wiring erring on the side of safety .just because its portable that shouldn't make any difference regs or not
