I once owned a Mk3 (late 90s). The previous owner had fitted a Rover V8 with downdraught Webers on it. Bought it for £3k. Sold it for £3.5k. Those were the days!

I had never heard of the Lotus Emira but there were a couple at a recent car show and they are a really nice design close up. Don't think I've seen one on the road yet.

I forgot about the V4. My dad had a transit with a 1700 low compression V4 it drank petrol but didn't seem to convert any of it into power.

I can verify that.

The new Mustang must be the biggest downgrade of a name ever. So many names you could imagine, why devalue a name with such magnificent history just to cash in on buyer recognition for a few years?

I had one of those, the diff was too tall for the motor and rear end happy.

A mate had a Probe and yes we did take the pizz out of him it was a Mazda underneath but not a bad car really.
I had a 2.5 V6 Cougar and it was a nice car to be fair,not that powerful at about 160bhp but it did rev well!
It always pinked thought and I could never get to the bottom of it
Sold it for a shyit 2.2 Vauxhall Omega when the sprog was on his way

I liked my Cougar dressed in Burple, it ran best on Ford plugs. Terrible with NGK's and switch the aircon off for the extra 40HP boost. Back seat for short people only.

My mate had a mk1 with the 2.0 V4. It sounded lovely with a loud exhaust on, a real off beat exhaust note. I can vouch for the fact it wasn’t exactly quick, but it looked and sounded like a proper muscle car.

He unfortunately managed to turn it over when we were on our way to a motocross race, and that was the end of that.

My brother also had a mk2 3.0 S but not for very long. The petrol prices were too much for him so he swapped it for a mk2 escort 1.6.

A combination of reasons, fashion and because people are generally becoming fatter, less fit and more lazy.

For example look at group photos of say a parents race at a school sports day in the late 70s, to the same photo this summer.

I think it has far more to it than that. For a start the companies have to constantly tell everyone they need something bigger better or different. People are led to what car they want for the most part and buy what they are told. And this has to constantly be something different or the car companies would sell less cars.
You also have the fact every day life has grown massively. Not just people but the equipment in the car has grown from the safety stuff they have to fit in to what we carry. A child's car seat is huge now days. The ones that swivel that we are told we need simply wouldn't fit in a hatch back. The push chairs now don't fold up nearly as small. Don't get me wrong they far far far better quality than what there was when I was a kid but they are huge. Then we have the weekly shop instead of more regular local shopping requiring a bigger boot. And the packaging from the supermarkets grows constantly.
Then the car designers get all artistic and make the boots inefficiently shaped and the bonnet really long and the centre console massively bulky and you end up buying a car far bigger than you initially thought you would need.

Im not a Ford man but a lot of the guys at work have Ford Kugas and love them , 2.5lt petrol non turbo and 240bhp with electric assistance regularly get around 80mpg which is nuts but they have a cheapy feel inside to me
