2 cylinder peters engine

Just dragged an old welder out the shed that hasn't ran in at least 10 ten years. It's got a 2 cylinder Peter's engine turning fine and nearly kicked up .What's best to put down the 2 little tubes that inject into engine to help it start?

electric or manual start out of interest, I had a single cylinder petter more or less the same, I preferred rope start than the starting handle.

I just used to put a little engine oil in them. Worked fine. Does your engine have the countdown decompressors (BA2)?

Manual start. Got it going today had a bit more umph in me this morning

i have a knob on my briggs and stratton diesel engine you click it once and the engine is decompressed . when you crank it over it turns and clicks for 7 times then compresses and starts

Similar to what brightspark says. On the Petter twin that I had, you moved both levers to the decompression setting and as you turned the engine over, you could hear them clicking to the compressed state by which time you had hopefully got the engine turning over fast enough to fire. Often referred to as 'countdown starters'

Had a Petters PH2 in a dumper that would only run very very roughly. One of the causes was a completely blocked (with carbon) exhaust port. I was told the cause was standing ticking over whilst the driver/s went to tea/meal breaks.

I had a friend with a 2 cylinder Bedford rascal or similar, it never ran right, partly because he was forever fiddling with the mixture. Anyway, he had it rebuilt, thing wouldn't run on both cylinders, so he asked me and another mate to check it out. Sure enough, only one cylinder, despite sharing the carb, spark was good, cam was good. So we poked the cast iron exhaust manifold - blocked solid...

Good engines, although the AD2 is better... easier starter being direct injection.
