You really should add a footnote MK
The danger is, if you exceed the required rating, something else can be damaged by excess current that the fuse was designed to protect.

Which Maplin did you go to, I wasn't aware there were any wise men working for them since I left!!
Seriously though, you can buy all the bits to fix the board, including the motor. I Know, I've fixed my clarke 90 twice. The last time I used a motor from a cheap cordless drill. The correct motor (for mine) is an RS540/12v
The problem seems to be metal particles being attracted to the motor, usually form grinding operations. generally ruins the motor, and can short it out.

That's 0.5 Amp Fastblow, do not fit any fuses prefixed "T" (time) as they are slowblow and could cause damage.

If it is blowing fuses, there is probably some other problem. If the power transistor was bad, either it would run fast or not work.
Could be you also have a bad diode bridge and getting AC on the output. Or you rmotor is gone bad and drawing way too much current. Sounds like the board is fine.

cheers series 2 a bit complex for a hairy a*sed welder like me i'm not that clued up on electronics....i see you're from warrington...that's where the bloody welding set came from thats caused this extremely long thread (is this a record )..i might go down the getting it looked at by a pro route...cheers all.

55 posts no record I'm afraid we once did that in one evening on a thread in social club (just before Christmas). Have a look @ the motor and look for metal dust take it out an see if it runs smoothly have you got access to a bench power supply they often have ammeter on them try running motor and see what current it pulls
Moral of the story...stick your hand in your pocket & buy new! 
I don't know about others, but I certainly couldn't do without essential kit for too long...what you 'save' on purchase price is lost in time fecking about!! (not to mention years off your life with frustration!).

I coudn't agree more, But If you are poor like me,
you often have to 'make do and mend'.Ive managed to keep my Pro90 going for 10 years, still works as well as it did when it was new, and for bodywork & chassis repairs it's adequate.
Good for you. Testament to the general reliability of Clarke MIGs + to you for keeping it in good order. Can't help but pull my hair out though by expectations of A1 working order and ex-stock spares availabilty for 20+ year old welders...these aren't classic cars when all said & done.
