If the machine will take 15kg rolls it can be a big cost saving. Downside is you need to use it as if it gets damp and corrodes the roll might end up scrap, learnt that the hard way! We used to roll 3 x 5kg from a 15kg as the machine only took 5kg and we were going through it. We then upgraded the machine and ended up with a part used 15kg and little work so it rusted.
The reel in question was a Clarke item so I suppose their ranges can take it but I have other makes of machine.
Point taken about the non use of the machine though and is a valid point. Winding onto smaller reels is not easy I would have thought as getting it to feed freely is essential when welding.

They are designed to take 5 or 5 and 15 ..either with the reel size or the power of the drive motor

on the clarke blue type it has the spacer built in on the reel holder however i have a 15kg on mine but its not keen on it but does change its wire speed as i also made a reel holder external to the unit and wired into the system using a bicycle brake cable wire through a plastic gromit into the machine if not it earths itself to the mig welder
i made an external reel holder for the 15kg and run the wire inline with the welder the wire reel has enough tension to not birds nest until lower down the reel just to note it pulls on the side of the case

Did you have a speical machine to do the rewinding,if not be interested on how you managed it?

I would not bother with large spools, they rust as mentioned above and many machines dont have powerfull enoug motors to feed the heavy rolls properly. Stick to what you used before and just use as you go along...
My last reel of flux cored wire has lasted over 10 years in my clarke 150te, my dad never liked Mig welding as he was using oxy type welding gear... I think i used it 2 or 3 times last year, on a very rusty mercedes vito and a few exhausts... For me is the tig everytime!

Thanks for all your replies. I agree with you all. It was just because it was at a auction and would be cheap that I was tempted. In the end it went for £18 plus 15% fees, but not to me, which was a canny price considering they are nearly £60 from MM! Mind the box was in tatters but it still had the paper wire covering on.

No machine, the 5kg drum was held on an adaptor in the lathe and the 15kg on a spindle a few feet away then guided by gloved hand with the lathe running.
