I never bothered collecting or restoring domestic sets, but had the odd military one from time to time. One I still have, a Murphy 52B set, is just too... fantastic to let go, and will be with me until I croak. It's still as sensitive to faint signals as the day it was made, and can be re-aligned, repaired, rebuilt almost ad-infinitum, as none of the valves in it are all that rare, and can be subbed with something else - hell, they can be subbed with solid state plug-ins if I could be bothered.
A scrappy told me that in the 60s and 70s, when these sets were being flogged off by the MoD, they were crushed en-masse for the massive aluminium chassis in them. Damned shame, but that's what makes mine worth a few quid now - albeit to a very small and dwindling group of buyers, if I ever wanted to sell it.
