I refuse to do pub callouts these days, non of them have any money for maintainance and all the gear is bodged up with tape or covered with beer / fat from the kitchens and they wonder why you can not fix it half an hour before kick off.

I'm sure the 1960s was great: The Beatles, psychedelic drugs, sexual license, etc, etc. But hanging-out on an Internet forum hankering for the pre-solid-state electronic era is more than slightly ridiculous. There's basically nothing electronic still built with valve-like electron devices nowadays, and that's because engineers have chosen better alternatives.

I remember havin a go at the BIL's guitar and the amp was a marshall?,the damn controls were at full volume and I twanged the strings and the brown stuff nealy came out....the room vibrated and bounced the sound off all four walls.

Some of them are collectors items now. I have one radio that belonged to my grandmother, which was made by the Pye company. The Pye had a factory a mile or so away from me here in Dundrum and thats where mine was made. I like the fact that people bought electrical stuff and expected not to get a year or two out of it, but decades.
One radio i would like is the one in the picture below, i love the art-deco design on the speaker grille.

Valves still have their place for certain applications. It's that simple. Progress doesn't always imply improvement.
