Reference the aluminium cables, GPO/BT used a lot of aluminium cables in the mid to late 70’s because of copper shortages & subsequent price rises. It was a disaster, caused no end of problems due to corrosion, bad connections & breakage. They soon went back to using copper, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some ally still in the ground festering away.

Had a lotus Elan with all wires were White & every circuit controlled by a relay, loom was laced not wrapped superb job but a nightmare.

As said never had a job that the Iroda 180 £30+VAT from CPC will not solder, even some small lugs on modern battery connections (think light weight) & comes with 2 gas tanks not had one loose gas as yet

Anyone using a flame heat in a car the finishes melt at a sniff of heat Also check insurance for hot work, If possible change wire rather than joint, same as plumbers replacing 1\2 meter of pipe when there are joints within a few100mm 2 more joints to leak
Tried small gas irons @premmington & would agree spit, temp control, eat tips & leak Have one make unknown I keep in van, it is marginal & as for battery irons
@Morrisman never found a thermostat on one of those solder guns they are usually just a transformer & switch in a plastic box

I picked up my little Dremel blowtorch today, took it home, unwrapped it..... then remembered it doesn’t come with gas, so I slipped off to buy some and hope, to test it out on the morrow. It appears quite robust and fired up easily enough once filled.

ive worked on a few houses that have aluminium cable still . half of the estate is wired with it . horrible stuff
