Reference the aluminium cables, GPO/BT used a lot of aluminium cables in the mid to late 70’s because of copper shortages & subsequent price rises. It was a disaster, caused no end of problems due to corrosion, bad connections & breakage. They soon went back to using copper, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some ally still in the ground festering away.

the finishes melt at a sniff of heat Also check insurance for hot work, If possible change wire rather than joint, same as plumbers replacing 1\2 meter of pipe when there are joints within a few100mm 2 more joints to leak
It appears quite robust and fired up easily enough once filled.
