1.5mm will run that no problem all day long. as said above . is there any need it doesnt take Einstein to look up the current carrying capacity of cable

No, the horsepower rating of a motor is its mechanical output power, not its electrical input power. The electrical power required will be higher due to losses.
Modern high efficiency motors have minimal losses, but older motors may be less efficient.

The motors efficiency should be detailed on the data plate so it can be taken in to account in calculations.


But generally you don't need to bother because you can also find the full load current from the motor data plate.

god help us if its anything more than a simple 3 wire load 2o minutes to wire one up and 5 days debating it get on to big heavy cables on long runs costing hundreds with heavy loads then it becomes important to critically calculate it

Of course it did, but it generates good discussion for others to understand why, you know it inside out, others don't, and that's the benefit of this place, you can learn from others experience, and sometimes have a bit of craic on the way.

I just run the calc, someone to far brighter than I worked it all out, it's historically proven and reliable
