I'd get rid of the paint first. Lately I've been boiling parts in baking soda to remove paint but the vice is a bit big for that.

Nitromors won't remove the paint either. Not unless it's a stash of the old formula. I'd just use a wire brush on an angle grinder. It will remove crud, rust and paint in one go.That's a blow!

Before. If you go the electrolysis route instead of using citric acid, you can kill both birds with one stone, both paint removal & derusting, as you'll be using an alkaline solution.

Hello guys, I’ve posted here before and really enjoy this forum and this particular thread.
I have a question for the vice collectors, particularly anyone who happens to have Record No 3s, and ideally the old ones with the patent number cast on the left side.
I have one such No 3 and the handle was missing and a random piece of metal was used as a substitute. I have measured the metal handle bar on a few more modern no 3’s (modern enough that they have the cast-in slots on the base for bolts, instead of drilled holes, but still say made in England on the back of the slide) and they use 1/2” diameter bar (assuming mild steel) and 12 mm on the newer Irwin Records, which makes sense.
The hole the handle passes through on my old No3 seems to be a bit looser around a replacement piece of 1/2” diameter bright mild steel bar than looks “right” to my eye. I have a feeling the older ones might have used a bit thicker bar for the handles, but not sure, could easily be wrong and that’s just how they are supposed to be.
Is anyone who has one of these older No 3s able to verify the handle diameter for me please? I’d really appreciate it. The handle length would also be really nice to know (length of bar between the end pieces, not including those end pieces).
Here’s some pictures of the No 3. It’s in really nice shape, and has the sticker on the side. Seems to have had an easy life, other than the handle situation. The pin for retaining the nut was missing and someone had pushed a bolt in there. I’ve kept that in for now, just pushed in from above instead of how it was until I replace it with a suitable pin. I have shown it from when I started working in it to when I cleaned it up and mounted onto a steel plate and temporarily clamped to the bench at work. It’s my everyday vice in the machine shop. The old random handle is on it in these pictures, I have since replaced it with a piece of 1/2” bright mild steel bar.

id not do that your making the metal part there thiner so if you lever towards yourself more easy for it to break
