instead of cast iron for the centers should they not be a FORGING.....?????
Yes they should be forged steel, or if cast should be heat treated afterwards.instead of cast iron for the centers should they not be a FORGING.....?????
The way it broke and the weakness suggests lowest grade cast ironYes they should be forged steel, or if cast should be heat treated afterwards.
I suspect its cast steel rather than cast iron but if its poor quality steel (high levels of impurities and scrap) it will be only marginally better
really.......cast iron will break if you give it a whack....cast steel should dent firstThe way it broke and the weakness suggests lowest grade cast iron
That broke like nasty old cast iron, zero yield, straight to failurereally.......cast iron will break if you give it a whack....cast steel should dent first
This is what happens when you make stuff out of old washing machines....
As others have said....rule of 3 for me too. I use Halfords stands and they have never let me down....but they are 20 years old.
I prefer the tube design...I feel safer with them than a cast item.
dreadful.....no-one in their right mind would even consider using cast iron for a part such as thatThat broke like nasty old cast iron, zero yield, straight to failure
Unless its perfectly straight up there will be shear and maybe even tension...cast iron is good in compression but thats all.I’m missing something obvious here, but surely that part is used in compression, which even if it was cast iron would have taken the load.
I could understand it if one of the ratchet prongs had broken, but it was the body, was it subjected to a side load perhaps?
